Adoption: What do you think of Open adoption? Is it always a good idea?

Yes, being open and honest is always the best way in adoption.

I don't like words like "always" and "never". Each situation is different.

I would say in MOST situations open adoption is best. However, if the first parents were abusive to the child, then no I do not think open adoption is for the best.

I don't think open adoption is ALWAYS a good idea. In general, yes, adoptions should be open. But, in some cases, such as a rape, or drug abuse, previous child abuse in older siblings, an open adoption would not be a good thing. Also, I think that the adoptee should be at least 18 before they are allowed any contact and only then if both parties agree.

I think open adoptions are a good idea. I was adopted, but mine was a closed adoption and would have very much liked to know about my birth family.

I think that should always be up to the adoptee to answer. For awhile, I believed that open adoption would ALWAYS be a good thing. And then I heard from some adoptees that it is very painful to see their parents leaving, and wonder why they couldn't go with them.

Openness and honesty is extremely important. Each person has the basic human right to know who they are. But what that looks like in each adoptee's life should be 100% up to the adoptee.

**Assuming, of course, that contact with the first parents would be safe.

if the birth relatives are "safe" and nice then yes of course. i was adopted and the only bad thing about it was leaving my birth relatives. leaving the birth parents was brilliant, but not the rest.
i had contact with my maternal birth relatives because they could be trusted to keep me hidden from the birth parents. i had no contact with the paternal relatives because they were on His side and i would not have been safe. that was a big loss, and i lost people and culture because they were a different nationality.
if i could have had contact with them then everything would have been perfect. but you cant have everything! open adoption is definately good if the birth relatives are nice to you. if theyre not then of course its not a good idea.
if you have contact with birth relatives then theyre just extra grandparents, aunties, uncles, cousins, same as the rest. you dont make a distinction. even in a biological family half your aunties and uncles are not biologically related to you - but it doesnt matter in the slightest. you dont say "Oh Uncle Sam is my real uncle because hes my Grannies son, but Uncle Fred isnt a real Uncle because hes only married to Aunty Kath" - they're all the same.
if i saw my birth mother i called her aunty, same as my cousins did.
for me at least the only negative thing about adoption was losing people, so if there'd been contact with all the birth relatives, there would have been no problem at all.
