Adoption before 1975 laws?

why is it that to get my original birth certificute i have to have a meeting and counslling befor i can apply for it, at 44 i feel i dont need some one to hold my hand and talk to me, i could understand if i was 18 but with children of my own and a full life ,its just the info iam after to start looking into my family tree as ive just finished, doing my parents tree back to the late 1700,ive no intrest to trace my birth mother,so why all the paper work and hassel .if your a mum whom gave a child up for adopton how would you feel knowing the child had infomation that they may be able to trace you. thank you for the input i know its a sensetive subject.

I am also adopted and have also been through the counselling thing. To be honest, it wasn't too arduous.

It may be a pain but at least in the United Kingdom Adoptees' human rights to information about their own lives have been restored. Go thru the motions and at least you will get the information that is rightfully yours. I agree it's dumb to be treated forever as a child.

I reckon your Mum was probably one of the girls sent away in shame. I think it's awful that Mums of that era were forced to give up their babies because they had no wedding ring and then subjected to a life of never knowing what became of that child. If I were you I'd give her the simple courtesy of letting her know you're alive and well.

It's so frustrating, isn't it? Im 43, and have been in reunion for 22 years, yet I am STILL not permitted to have my original birth certificate.

These laws were set up for adoptive parents. Most n moms did NOT want anonymity.

9 years in reunion and my daughter still can't have hers either. Not even if her parents and I say she can. How would I feel about her having info that she could track me down with. I'd be ecstatic. She didn't need it to find me, but she should still have it available to her same as anyone else.

I am a natural mom who was forced into an illegal adoption in the 1960s.

I wanted to be found. Most natural mothers do want their children to find them.

but, I also wanted to be the one to find my child, because I didn't think he should have to face the possibility of "rejection."

He didn't know that I always wanted him and that I didn't want to surrender him.

I sent a letter to the adoption agency and found that he had already been there, trying to get information about me.

So, I hired a searcher and sent him a letter. He got it a awhile later and we were reunited.

Isn't it ridiculous?! I'm even older than you & met my 1st mom in 1983. She was working on getting a copy of my OBC for me before she died in 1998. Laws have since changed & I can now get a copy of my OBC.

That is...with the written permission of my ADOPTED mother! We haven't been in contact since 1997, the year my a.dad died and she disowned me! I'm a grandmother, can tell you most everything on my OBC & still can't have a copy without my "legal" mommy's written permission. Or I'll just have to wait until she passes away and provide a copy of her death certificate. Not that I'm wishing for that.

I'm with you! It's crazy!

I am guessing UK right?

I went for counselling before getting mine - I was about 25 or so.

Honestly all it was to a cup of coffee and a chat to make sure I was who I said I was and wasn't a nutter. I was in and out in about 15 minutes.

The thing is I did trace my biological mum quite easily via the internet a couple of years ago. I took me about 1 hour, cost less than £10 and I visited 5 web addresses.

In 1972 when I was adopted that would not have been possible - my bio mum may have thought she could never have been found - and she also has rights - what about if she has another family that dont know about you and you turn up on the doorstep. OK you may not do that but some people may.
