Adoption by moms boyfriend?

Adoption by moms boyfriend?

My mom and her boyfriend have been dating for about 9 years. He is like a step dad to me. 7(almost 8) years ago my biological father died.
If I wanted my moms boyfriend to adopt me. Would they have to get married?
And if he did adopt me, Could I just put his last name at the end of my name?
Like, as a second last name.
My mom was talking about it a couple months ago.
And I was wondering if those things were possible.

And I live in NH
Thanks for the help :p

They don't have to be married first. That doesn't matter. You can add his name to your last name, or change your name entirely.

mom of many
your mom and him would ave to be married to each other first. But something else to consider...if they get married and he adopts you then you are no longer considered a child of your deseased father so more than likely you and your Mom will lose the social security money that you receive.....EDIT: I don't know why I would get a thumbs down when it is a fact that they would have to be married for him to adopt. Single people can adopt but not in a case of step parent adoption. You can have your name changed without adoption but that would not change the fathers name on your birth certificate.
