Real Moms Raise Their Children
Careful with adopting from those places...not to put a damper on things, but a lot of those kids are actually kidnapped and do have families who are looking for them. There are many documentaries on this...

The process for India, from an Indian perspective, can be found here: http://www.adoptionindia.nic.in/ Reference "Adoption Procedures" and then "Inter Country" to get the info you need. Of course your own Country may have requirements but this site will get you started and hopefully direct you through. Since we did ours, adoptions from India have lessened for a number of reasons but they are possible and there are, by some accounts, millions of children waiting for homes.

Check out the forum "Informed Adoption Advocates".

Very good information and resources.

I'm assuming you are in the US. This is the government website on international adoption. It lists each country and then has pages specifically on that country. Just look through the pull down menu and select either China or India.

http://adoption.state.gov/countryinformation.html

Its going to be expensive. Plan on at lease $20,000 and it taking multiple years. China is very difficult to adopt from at this point. If you are single you cannot adopt from there. They have medical requirements, age requirements, etc that are more strict than some countries. My friends adopted from there a year ago and their wait was 2 years. The wait time now is much longer. I've heard anywhere from 4-7 years wait now.

From looking over India's page it looks a little easier than China. I don't know from personal experience but there is a poster who adopted from India. Hopefully he will stop by. They do allow singles to adopt.

Some good things are that if done the right way you are really helping a child in need. Many live in orphanages that are overloaded with kids and have very limited funds. There are also few resources for kids who age out and are not adopted so being adopted is in their best interest.

Negatives would be that not all countries/agencies are ethical. There are cases of children being stolen and sold for adoption. There is a huge financial expense and wait time can be long.

Whichever path you decide research is important. The more the better. Not all agencies are equal in the way they work and how ethical they are. There are tons out there too. Good luck finding the right one and adding to your family.

Why do uninformed people just add their opinions here without knowing the facts? I have adopted from China. Yes, the traditional program is much longer, but the waiting child(special needs) is not. You can research many agencies, and make a decision on the one you like, and you can adopt a child with a mild, moderate to severe special need if you are open to it, much sooner. Our daughter was a special needs adoption, but she is doing just fine, and adjusting well. I don't know anything about India adoption.

Also, it is not true that most of these kids are kidnapped, etc. In China, children are abandoned by their birth families every day. Yes, there is child trafficking all over the globe, but just do a little research and you will find all the info. you need to make a decision.

Right now there is actually a shortage of babies to adopt in China. That means it'll take even longer to adopt from China than it normally would when there are too many babies. Holt International is the agency my parents used to adopt from China.

I would check out rainbowkids.com They have alot of info about all the countries. I've heard that China is moving so slow right now that it's almost shut down. You also have to make a decent amount of money to adopt from there. We don't qualify to had to pick another country. I also looked into India. Some agencies will tell you that you have to be of Indian decent to adopt from there, but not all. The biggest thing with that country is that you have to wait 18 months after you receive a referral of a child to travel. That's a terribly long wait once you already know who your child is. We just got our referral for our kids from the Philippines and our 3-4 month wait is going to drive me crazy!
