Adoption of a grandchild?

I am raising my 3 year old grandson. I have had him since he was 6 months old. We are considering adoption (with the mothers blessing) father of the child is unknown. What steps do we need to take? This is all so very new to us. We do have legal custody of him through the state at this time.

you need to hire a family attorney and have your grandson's mother sign over her parental rights. whereas you have custody of him now and she is consenting, it should move along fairly smoothly. |

Talk with an adoption lawyer so you get it all done correctly.
If you're on good relations, please keep it an open adoption so mom and child can know each other.
My wife has a friend who adopted her grandchild and it's worked well.

You have to get a family lawyer, one who specializes in adoption, however you might risk the chance of having the state put the child in foster care while the adoption is final... I'm not 100% sure but consult a lawyer. And good luck. |

Why? The father is not unknown the mother knows who she slept with and you or her should never put that on a child. Even if she isn't sure who the father was she needed to give names. I have met so many adoptees that have never found their father and have had to wonder about him or her.
As far as adoption you grandchild why? If the mother was dead yea good idea. My in-laws raised their grandson son 1 and 2 year old for over 6 years until the father got married and out of collage. The mother abandon them and never even came to see them but they knew who she was. Anyways everything worked out great.In fact it was for the best. 4 years latter my father-in-law died it would have been so hard for my mother-in-law to raise them by her self. And when these children grew up they located their mother only to find out she had 2 more children and gave them away to. Sad thing they also found their other set of grandparents that didn't want anything to do with them.
Just leave it alone their is on need to adopt. |
