Hi, My wife had a child before I met her she was 1 and is now 9 and I've looked after her for 8yrs, she has never known her real Dad and he recently said she's not his but now wants to see her, where do I stand on adopting her?

A local family solicitor will probably off you a free or low-cost initial consultation. That's your best bet.

If the father has registered his parental rights, he will need to agree to the adoption and/or he will have to be proven unfit for joint custody in court.

I hope you are able to come to an amicable arrangement with the child's father; for the sake of the child.

Your best bet is to ask a solicitor who deals with family law or social services for the correct procedure. I do know that if her father is on the birth certificate then he will be asked if he agrees to you adopting your step daughter. Either way it can't be done as a private adoption as that's illegal but on the other hand there is no reason why you shouldn't adopt your step daughter. Good luck.
