In my state this is called adoption subsidy or an adoption assistance payment. If they were only getting 300.00 a month then they probably never asked for an increase.

I would say they did have it stopped but in my state they could have it started again prior to your 18th birthday. They probably need to call someone and ask.

You could probably call and ask yourself. If they did have it stopped, then they did right since you were not living with them. By them NOT stopping it they could have gotten in big trouble since they would have been fraud.

As far as trying to find out information about your adoption, there are a lot of people in this forum that can help with that.

Good luck to you and I hope things get better for you.

Actually eharrah1, in some areas adoptive parents do get a cheque each month. In my area, for the 8 month old we adopted, we get almost $750 a month, tax free, and the amount will only get larger till she turns 18.

They refer to it, at least here, as "supports for permanence" and it is intended to ensure that adoptive families don't break down due to financial stresses. It's not something that we ask for, it is automatic once the adoption is completed IF it's completed through Foster Care. It is essentially the same money we received as Foster Parents each month before the adoption was completed.

Now, to address the question of the young man. If your area is like mine the money is technically not yours, it goes to your family. What they choose to do with it is their business and it's much like the "baby bonus" we have here in Canada where any parent with a child under 18 gets a cheque each month from the Govt. Its more as the child is younger and eventually peters off as the child gets closer to 18.

If your parents chose to turn it down or chose to keep it themselves or chose to donate it to a church...what ever, it's theirs to do with what they want (as I see it). Other then perhaps lying to you about it I don't see what the issue is.

Texas will also grant an 'adoption stipend' in certain cases of adoption through foster care. It is usually meant for cases when the child is special needs and/or may need additional care in the future. For example if the child has a learning disability will need additional therapy and special education. The stipend is usually about $400 a month.

In terms of the question... who knows? You know your adoptive parents better than any of us. You clearly have some conflict with them and so you believe the 'worst'. Look at this way... they have looked after you for 6-7 years, even if they kept the money for themselves, it still does not cover what they have spent over the years. Its a few $100, it isn't a life changing amount of money.

Resolve things with your parents. Focus on moving forward with your life. Resentment and suspicion will only make things worse. You will be much happier down the road.

Ummm, what?

Your question is incomprehensibly garbled I'm afraid. Please rephrase it in an understandable manner.

Most of the time, the only reason adoptive parents get a subsidy is when they are below a certain income level, and adopting a child would mean having to spend more. It's a way to keep lack of money from being the reason some people can't adopt.

I don't know if there's a way you can find out, but there is the chance that someone who processes/processed that monthly payment would simply give you that information if you called and asked.

I can see how people would be worried about being accused of fraud if an adopted child moved out, so I find it feasible they stopped the check. Nobody wants to go to prison for fraud if they're normal.

Also, though, when there is money being sent to assist with child support (regardless of where it comes from) kids often start to believe the only reason someone wanted them was for the monthly payment. I can see how, if your parents are still getting the check, they may not want you to know because they may not want you to think they only care about the money. Just as parents who get custody in a divorce usually really want and love their children (but may get child support from the ex-spouse), people who adopt can truly want the child and love the child (but find it helpful to get a little assistance).

Adoption subsidies/child support are something that are worked out between the subsidy provider/court and the adoptive parents. Elibility for such money depends on a very specific situation and on the people's expenses and income. Many young people believe they are entitled to such money if they move out before reaching 18 (when payments may end). That's not how it works, and there are people monitoring changes in living arrangements.

They might could get in trouble if they took the checks with you not living there. So they very well might have called them and had the checks stopped.

You don't get a check for adopting someone. It is illegal. Foster parents maybe. Or, there may have been a trust fund for you that they were getting if you are a minor but that check is not for them for adopting you. I would check into that if I were you.
