Adoptive parents...do you get a monthly stipend for your children?

I have recently heard that there are people out there who believe a special needs child adopted through a domestic infant adoption would receive a monthly stipend through the state. I am not aware of such a thing and I was wondering if you knew of anything. The only thing I can think of is that there is salary cap that would make some eligible and others not.

I am very curious about this as I know a single mother with an adopted son with a very low functioning form of autism and she doesn't receive any help and she sure could use it. She has been trying to get her insurance to cover the handheld computer that her son could use to type the words and the computer would speak for him...sorry, I cannot think of the name of that machine. I am lucky enough that my daughter speaks very well, but I know it would do her heart good to hear her son speak. Her health insurance will not cover it and if she could get some extra help she could buy it for him herself.

Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

She is very minimally above the income level to collect social security benefits for him. She is currently appealing that decision based on the severity of his condition.

LOL, yeah right. in my state, to get a stipend you must follow certain steps;

-Child must be placed on the "Oapl". http://www.odjfs.state.oh.us/oapl/query.asp
See all the kids with a heart? Those are kids who are in home of people who wish to adopt them, but refuse to do so, unless they get a stipend.

-The child is listed for a number of days/months, if no one steps up and offers to adopt him/her, then they are considered "hard to place" and the PAPs can request a stipend, in exchange for adopting them. the child MUST be unadoptable with out a stipend, in order to get one.

So if you wanted to adopt a special need child privately, the there is little to no change of a stipend. ANY newborn place on the site will get "offers" instantly. We inquired about this when we discovered that our son would have life long medical problems and just hoped to get medicaid for him, but there is NO WAY in hELL that I am going to "offer" his up on this site just for some money.

The stipend is determined by the state. It is based on the special needs of the child, regardless of the income of the adoptive parents.
All African American, children, and other minorities, qualify if they are adopted from the foster care system, because they are considered special needs. There are other qualifying factors, such as physical and or emotional needs. When the home study has been completed and approved, the caseworker should explain the adoptive assistance program. The amount varies from state to state.
You have to adopt from foster care to qualify. Did she adopt from the foster care system?
Yes, we do receive a stipend.

The families I know that get stipends adopted their children out of the foster care system. In one family the father is an orthopedist, so I don't think there is a salary cap issue there. I live in Oregon, so the laws in your state may vary. HTH!

Our youngest was adopted this past summer through foster care and when the adoption was being completed we learned that about 75% of the monthly stipend we received as foster parents would continue after her adoption and would increase as she got older. We would also have access to funds to assist with any learning or developmental delays she may develop as she gets older. This is done to help protect against adoption breakdown and it's common in many areas apparently.

Yes, we receive an adoption subsidy check every month. The reasoning behind this is that they considered our son hard to place because of his age and because he has Fetal Alcohol Effects.

I have not heard of anyone adopting through an agency receiving a subsidy. Just those that adopt through Foster Care.

I would suggest the Lady you are taking about see about applying for Social Security for her child. I know it is a long and tedious process and from what I have heard most people are denied at least once. Then have to start the process over preferably with an attorney.

Some children adopted through the foster care system are eligible for a monthly stipend. That may have been what you heard. I don't know much else about it though.
My son was diagnosed with Asperger's and because of that he is on Medicaid. They pay for everything. We did not have to meet any income requirements (as I am sure we wouldn't have anyway since our income is high), but just because he had a diagnosis, he qualified. We went through the IU13 (that's what they call it in PA).

One of my twins has Asperger's, but no. We are in the higher-income bracket.

Your friend might want to look into a private agency for help.

I adopted my son through foster care and yes, we get a check for him every month until he turns 18. This is supposedly because it costs the county (Los Angeles) less to give APs money through the Adoption Assistance Program than it does to feed, clothe, and house foster kids for 18 years.

My son and his wife adopted his sisters son (Russ ) 8 years ago Russ was taken away from his real mother at birth and placed in foster care and adopted to family (my son). Over the last two years two more kids were adopted they are both siblings of Russ thier real mom in prison agian. my son took them in and after three years adopted them too. the question is my son does not make alot of money my guess is 18 dollars an ahour his wife doesnt work they have a total of seven kids including the three they adopted . I know Russ gets supsidies due to his delay from his moms drug abuse , but my daughter in law says they dont get any stepends or supsidies . I dont know if I believe if my daughter in law is being truthfull since she has been caught in numerious lies. I have been helping them finacially for 15 years , I want to retire in a year I feel guilty for wanting to retire since I feel like these are my grand kids and I dont want them to suffer. I am desperatly needing to find out if the last two get any finacial help or medical etc since my daughter in law says they get nothing. They live in Oregon any here know?
