Adoptors of foreign babies/children; why did you choose the country you chose?

Why China? Why Russia? (example)

We decided to adopt from China after a year and a half of research and speaking to other adoptive parents. The process was predictable and had an excellent reputation and there was a need. We brought our gorgeous girl home in 2006 and she is the love of our lives. She will soon be a big sister to fabulous 2-year old bundle of energy that we are adopting through our local foster care.

We chose to adopt from Liberia (West Africa) after a lot of research. We looked at a lot of different factors: process, cost, timeframe, problems with the process, reliability of the agency, language, culture and common adjustment issues with the children. As we chose to adopt school-age children, some of our best "recommendations" came from Liberian adoptees and their adoptive parents.

Our children have been home for a little over two years and are doing beautifully!

I adopted domestically in the U.S being an Indian. That makes us of different origin as my baby is of Hispanic origin and we are Indian.

We tried to adopt from India initially and were denied because of immigration laws. So we adopted domestically a baby who will look like an Indian. (We are light skinned Indians from the North of India).

In India no one can guess she is not "Indian" unless we choose to tell them. She is preetiest and the sweetest baby.

There are many reasons, for me, I had considered international adoption once, but then ended up adopting here. I had no racial preference, we are already a bi-racial family so that didn't matter. To me the considerations were which countries will accept a singe Mom, which countries could I adopt from within my adoption budget of $20K and what were the waiting times, and how stable were adoptions currently in that country.

In the end I had decided on Haiti. I live in Canda and there aren't as many countries that we can adopt from as people in the states can.

We chose Korea because the program is very well established, we met their requirements (so were steered toward it by the agency who get lots of applicants who do not qualify) and we knew we were in a good position to ensure that our child had a lot of access to his culture.

Also Korean babies are the cutest in the world.

Don't even TRY to argue with me!

My husband and I are looking into adoption and we decided on Africa, because the children there are really in need of homes. The company I was looking to go through says that the African children are the last to get picked because people are scared of the AIDS. The children in Africa become orphans mostly because their parents have died from the disease or from starvation. Before we picked Africa, we looked into Ukraine, because the children there are usually left on the street and their true birth date and age are never really known. That bothered me a lot.
