Advice needed-How to tell mom and stepdad that name change went through?
|
About a month ago, I talked to my mom and step-dad about me getting a name change. I wanted my name changed to where my last name would be the same as theirs. I am in my early 20s and wanted to do this for a long time (decade or so) but never had the money or found a lawyer who would do it for a reasonable price in our area. (In our area, the county and state that we live in requires you to retain legal counsel to do this. There aren't any do it yourself options). Anyways, the name change went through last week and yesterday I received the court documents in the mail. I just didn't know how to go about telling them about it. It's not that it is a shame thing or something I wasn't supposed to do, but I just lack the ability to be able to break news in general to people. I am not good at that for some reason. I was going to tonight, if they are still up after I get home from night school. Suggestions, advice please??

They should be so honored, and you have no reason to be nervous. Instead of actually having to say it, why not show them the papers? Just hand them to your parents and let them do the rest. You should stay while they read them, so you can see the smiles spread across their faces! Besides, if you just hand them the papers and walk out of the room, it will seem rude, and your parents may think you regret your decision. |

If both the parents were on board with the name change years ago. Maybe you could buy a picture frame and put the document in the frame and give it to them as a gift. I'm sure they will feel honored. |

well one way to break it to them is just go in and scream "Hey guess what my last name is?" but that also might give them a heart attack. I would think that the best way is to take them out to eat where you get reservations. You tell them (with your parents by you) the name that you want to have called(your new name) then your parents will probably give you a weird look and you just smile and say, "Do you like it?" or something like that. (p.s. I am sorry for any misspelled words i am hurrying for some reason.) |

Leave the court papers where they can see them. |

Just show them the court documents...that should open the line of communication. |
