Compassion International has a great sponsorship program. They set forth very clearly exactly how much money goes to the child, and don't only fund the child but do alot of work within the community so that when this educated child is done with school they actually have a place to work.

World Vision has a popular sponsorship program too, but less off the money goes to the child.

Global Strategies is a great non-profit where you can donate money to different regions to fund schools, hospitals, etc. They issue ALOT of neviropene (sp), which is the drug that prevents HIV+ mothers from passing HIV onto their children. Their program is really unique in that they do alot in the US to educate people about what is really going on in Africa and just how dire the situation is.

Any organization you donate too should be happy to give you a break down of exactly where and how your money is spent.

This is sponsering a child. It is completely different than adoption.

Yes that's called sponsoring a child. You don't adopt them, you just sponsor them with money 30$ a month or more, have letter exchangs via yourself and your sponsored child. Get updates on them with photos.

World Vision is one company that does this but they don't just sponsor in Africa. Of course there are many other companies.

This program is called "Rip Off," because 95 cents of every dollar you send goes to "the program," then 5 cents goes to Africa, where they steal it and children get nothing.
