http://www.jcics.org/Conference.htm Additional Details I'm especially interested in this part:
"How Did We Get Here: Exploring the Impact of Adult Adoptees on Intercountry Adoption Practices"

Even if I was in the area I wouldn't go. Not one of their speakers is an adoptee. I KNOW what the industry thinks about adoption, my interest isn't in what they want people to believe, my interest is in the reality. |

If you only want to hear what you already believe, looks like a good conference.
If you want to hear some reality, looks like you're going to be disappointed.
I'm reminded of a quote a friend of mine uses a lot: "Everyone wants a kitten. No one wants a cat." I think adoptees are a lot like that. When we're young and cute, everyone wants one. When we become adults and begin speaking our minds, no one wants to hear it. |

No way would I waste my time and money to go to a conference that is all about keeping the industry's corrupt message fresh in people's minds.
I am not at all interested in what the adoption industry thinks of adoption. |

No way.
With keynote speakers from Holt and Bethany, I would have a Kool-Aid overdose. I would go to protest, but I will be out of town on business when this joke of a conference is held.
The only thing involving truth at this conference will be the credit card numbers they collect from attendees. |

Yikes! This conference is all of the biggest marketers in one place! I admit I'd be a little afraid to go.
This so-called "joint conference" does not include one single representative from any organizations that focus on Children and Family Rights, First Parent concerns or Adoptee issues!
Not one of the topics addresses FP or Adoptee issues (nothing on ethics, family preservation, rights or reform from the POV of these two "sides of the triad"!) - only those of the facilitators and the APs. None of the speakers are adoptees or first parents - or even representatives from human rights organizations like UNICEF.
The only thing I saw that remotely addresses this is:
" Improving Practice, Improving Lives: What the Research is Teaching Us"
This one scares me:
"Human Trafficking and International Adoption - Definitions, Distinctions and Practice Implications"
It sounds like a "How to" on trafficking legally. If they are so different, why would this even be a topic?!
The only reason I would attend is to be a "double-agent" for the reform movement! It always helps to know what your opponent is thinking! |

I would go to see this seminar:
"Motivating and Managing Staff During Transitions and Difficult Times"
"This seminar will provide information on how management and staff can effectively communicate the pros, cons and possible solutions tied to running an organization. Specifically, many agencies are currently facing the challenges of downsizing, merging or closing. The presenter will offer advice on how they and others have kept a strong, loyal, positive atmosphere for their remaining staff while handling such difficult issues."
The closing option - yup - that's the one that I would encourage. Go find some honest work and stop raking in the $$$ off the misery of others. |
