Even with the ICWA laws in place? Someone told me they were. I just inquired on a sib group of 4 native kids.

I've actually been afraid to inquire on Native Kids because I've heard many people say that they don't place them with white folk. But these guys are too cute!

They're enforcing the ICWA laws seriously as of late. If your not an Enrolled Tribal Member, the chances are very slim. IF you can prove they WILL learn their culture, it might lean a little in your favor. However generally they like to place Indian children within the tribe , if not the tribe another Indian family.
You would be the last resort. |

We were told it was practically impossible if you were not a registered member of the same tribe (preferably) or (at least) some tribe. I inquired in 3 different states. |

Native American kids are the hardest to adopt if you are not Native American.
Placement of Native American kids has to be with another Native American. So, if you are Native American, then the adoption does become the easiest option for you. |

It is almost impossible. My aunt had a child in foster care for 3-4 years. When she inquired about adopting they moved him to a different foster care and stopped allowing her to fosther for them. |

A woman I used to talk to on a forum someplace in cyber space had a daughter that was Dakota. (I can't remember if she herself was...maybe Lakota.) I know from what she said, a child could go to any loving home of course, however if I remember correctly supposedly someone that could still raise the child with their culture is a first choice. |

It depends on the tribe and the individual situation. Some are very involved in any child placement situation and don't want their members going to non NA families, others simply aren't for whatever reasons. In some cases no appropriate NA family is available to foster or adopt. |

In my limited experience, they do everything possible to place NA kids with families with at least some NA lineage. If that's not possible, then it would certainly be in the children's best interest to be placed with a loving, committed family than to sit around in foster care for their whole childhood.
So...your chances of being able to adopt would be decreased but not eliminated altogether. |

Depending on the tribal law, you may have to prove you are of Native American descent. Most tribes (if not all) run on those laws. My uncle had to register himself (thanks to his grandma being full Creek/Muskogee) so he could adopt his son who is Creek and....oh Lord help me I can't remember. |
