And yes, there are loads of free resources for searching. Start by registering with the NY State Adoption Information Registry here http://www.health.state.ny.us/vital_records/adoption.htm

and at http://registry.adoption.com/ and http://isrr.net/

And lastly, help with the fight to restore Adoptee Rights

ETA. You need to apply for information from the State (link above) which will give you the age of your Mom and other information which will make the search alot easier. The Registry is free so do it today

ok my hubby was searching for his adopted family for 6 years, when he told me he wanted to find them, I used 2 search sites and found them in 3 hours. Do you have a last name? That is the most important part. let me know, maybe I can help. It took me 5 mins to find one of my friends dads.

Any idea how old she might be?? I found my sister's birthmom with about as much information as you have. I started making phone calls to people that may be her relatives...and found the right one that knew something. If she's out there, you can find her!!

Listen to Heather,Gershom,Possum....the best 3 on this forum. That said.....last name Thomas is gonna be tough,real tough.Common name....Woman marry too,use new hubbys last name...sometimes its easier and faster to search out the bdad..first. As someone else stated it is vital to have the date of birth, without it & a common last name,the search will burn you out....been there. Not to be morbid but save yourself the time first,check : Rootsweb SSDI first to make sure they are amongst the living. Sorry for not being positive but I've done alot of searches....80% found, 20% impossible.Take care.

I haven't found one yet, my oldest brother was adopted and he would be almost 40 now and I have been trying for 10 years to find a free way to find some information but nothing.

If you know her names and birth date you can do a people search or just her name, basically a background check ... it will have previous addresses and current and phone #'s ... they only cost about $50.
