As a single woman, can I adopt a child?

I'm a single woman, 23 years old. I have a good job and a college degree. Can I adopt a child? Or are they only for couples? How do I go about it?

Why not be a Big Sister first, then consider foster care down the road?

Try big sisters and also try being respite care for foster first if you aren't sure
Otherwise, yes you can legall adopt in the US. |

Im sure that you can adopt a child.
Even though your young you do have a good job.
So you would be able to support a child.
I would find an adoption agency.
& ask questions. |

I believe you can, depending on the country of adoption. Some countries have certain stipulations, such as they must be a married couple. Other countries are just happy to place the children in loving homes. Explore all your options. |

Try this website for legal info... www.adoptionsfromtheheart.com and try doing a search on adoption law for your country. I've looked into it a bit and financial stability is more important to them when they screen you. You might have to do a home study too, but it shouldn't be a problem. Don't let people degrade you because of your age. There is no age requirement to being a great mother. Those young girls who dump their babies are just like any other screw ups. It's not because of age at all. Good luck to you and your adoption! Peace ;) |

Yes, you can. (Your age is more likely to be an issue than your marital status, actually-- you'd be considered at the very minimum end of the age range, and your financial stability might be a concern. Waiting a few years might be a good idea.)
Most states allow single people to adopt from foster care. Private agencies and other countries have different sets of rules-- some allow it and some don't.
Your marital status won't prevent you from adopting, but it does somewhat limit your options. |

try foster care. you get money and support for the child and then when you choose a permanent placement child you can also receive money for them after you adopt,. being single that helps, medical ins. etc... you dont have to be married to adopt or foster care. and to adopt you only pay a small fee verses thousands of dollars straight up adoption, good luck |

You should be able to adopt a child, but it depends on what your state law is on age restrictions. Being single doesn't matter. You are young and still have a lot of time to decide what you want but if what you want is to adopt a child then you should research the agencies in your state and contact a few of them and see who you are comfortable working with. When you contact them they can tell you what the laws are and what you need to do. Also consider contacting your local social service agency and checking into fostering or adopting through them. Be sure of what you want before you start this process. It's long and hard and they dig into every aspect of your life. It's not as easy as some make it out to be. |

Yes, you can adopt as a single woman. But most agencies have an age requirement of 35. It will vary depending on the agency, but 35 years old is the norm. |

You're really young, and personally I think you may need to wait a while before making such a big decision. Wait for a few more years, you may meet someone and then you will want to have a biological child. If you like kids, and have a nice job that's only part time, try working extra hours at a daycare, because I'm sure you'll meet someone, and adoption shouldn't be just spur of the moment. Good luck! |

Wow. I say wait. I am 23 and can't imagine taking care of a child. Well, I can if I got pregnant by rape. But I wouldn't choose to have a child at my age. But then I am mentally unstable. |
