California Adoption Law
Who May Adopt
Statute: Family Code §§ 8600; 8601
An adult at least 10 years older than the child, except under conditions specified.

I found this on laws.adoption.com under California adoption law. You can also look in childwelfare.gov but it is harder to navigate so opted for the easy way out...... <yawn>
A particular agency may have additional specs related to age so you will need to contact them to check their policy but the above is the actual law code.

21 is usually the bare minimum. Different agencies, or different countries if you adopt overseas, may have different requirements, including a higher age. |

You usually won't pass the social worker's family investigation with approval until around 25, although you can apply earlier. |

Why are you worried about it if you are 14?
You are barely old enough to be on Yahoo! Answers. You can't drive, vote, hold a job (for more than a few hours a week, if that), buy a beer or cigarettes, even buy certain cold medicines or spray paint, die for your country...
Get a hobby, my dear. Get an education. Get some friends.
Just to 'officially' answer the question. You can start adopting children at birth. Or did you mean to ask "How old must an adoptive parent be?"
The VERY least one must be is 21. 21-year-olds don't often 'stack up' well against the older, more educated, more stable and more monied. |
