Yes, it is. The laws in every state are different, so you need to check with a lawyer. Your lawyer will put a public notice in the paper to "notify" your former family members of your intention, but no one ever looks through the legal notice section of the paper except for other lawyers. Other than that, you do not need their permission or appearance in court to be allow you to be adopted by someone else once you are no longer a minor.
After the adoption, a new birth certificate with the new parent(s) name(s) will be drawn up and your former BC will be sealed.
Among other things, this means that you would no longer be eligible for inheritance from your former family, unless they named you (rather than just saying "daughter" or "descendent") in their will. |

Yes, adults can adopt other adults as long as both parties consent. Look up "adult adoption <your state>" to find out the rules.
This is done for inheritance purposes, to establish legal "next of kin" relationships, or for emotional reasons and is legal in every state I believe, though the processes may differ slightly. |

Yes you can. My husband is being adopted this year and he is 35. In his case his parents have to do this so the will can treat him as a legal child. It's not too hard, you just need some paperwork from a private attorney. |
