Lost my job last year and was unable to secure a job then. Had to file bankruptcy. Last month I got a job and I think I will be OK. My husband did not file and also has a job. Does anyone know whether this bankruptcy will bar me from international - country adoption? Please let me know.

Depends what country you want to adopt from. Most are actually more difficult and have more stipulations than local. You need to research each individual country's policies. |

I think this may be a problem for you with international adoption. You will need to provide financial records for your home study and dossier which will include your current and past financial situations. I don't know where you are looking to adopt from, but when my husband and I did our paperwork, we had to show that we were financially stable from the last two years previous, (including checking accounts, savings accounts, retirement funds, health, death and life insurance, total debt and previous tax filings) and we had to have letters from our workplaces saying how long we'd been there, our wages, and basically the stability of our jobs. Your social worker should be able to give you a definate answer right away on this one, so you don't spend time and money on the process only to be turned down. |

You can adopt internationally after filing for bankruptcy. You might just need to show your social worker that you have a secure job now and that your bankruptcy occurred due to situations beyond your control. Or, they may not even ask you anything about it. It won't keep you from adopting internationally at all, though. People have unfortunate things happen in their lives, nobody's perfect! That doesn't mean you wouldn't make a great parent! I think so like others have said depends on each country. For the most from my experience it will depend on what your social worker says in the home study. You have to have their approval first. But the fact that you've only been at your current job one month a social worker may frown on. You'll need to be able to show how long you were at your prior job and how long you've been in this line of work which shows you shouldn't have a problem keeping or finding a job in this line. also having $ set aside in savings and retirement
The fact that the bankruptcy is so recent and that you just started a new job last month could be an issue during the homestudy though. |
