Can a single woman adopt a child?
|
I heard that it was very hard for a single person to adopt (considering I looked through all the questions that had been asked), is it true?
If it is, why? Additional Details What about adopting a baby?

In 1970, if you had gone to an adoption agency as a single person and applied for a child, you would have, unfortunately, been turned down-it just wasn't done. In fact, in some States, there were laws against single parent adoption. Now, thousands of children in the United States and other countries are living with single men and women who have chosen to become parents and who have been given the opportunity to provide a loving permanent home for a child. In the last 20 years there has been a steady, sizable increase in the number of single parent adoptions-some people feel that it is the fastest growing trend in the adoption field. Approximately 25 percent of the adoptions of children with special needs are by single men and women,1 and it is estimated that about 5 percent of all other adoptions are by single people. The outlook for single parent adoption is encouraging as it becomes more widely accepted. |

i think it depends on where you are trying to adopt from and what age child you want to adopt. if you are willing to adopt an older child it is a lot easier. i have a former teacher who adopted a child and she was single. |

It's funny because it's harder in some countries and easier in others. For example I think it's Cambodia, but a single woman has an easier time adopting than an unmarried couple.
I would say that it's harder, but I wouldn't say that it's incredibly harder. Really the issue you have to break through is, "are you as good of a home for that child as one that had two parents?" That can sometimes be a hard argument to make. |

You probably will have a hard time adopting a healthy white baby if you don't have a lot of money but it's easier if you are willing to take in a nonwhite baby, one with special needs, or an older child. There are more of these children available than people wanting to adopt them. |

No, it;s not true.
Sometimes when you are a single parent who is wanting to adopt a child. They have to make sure you don't have any financial problems. If you don't they will let you adopt one. |

Yes it is hard for a single person to adopt. It's even hard to adopt a child for a married couple. The people who run the whole adoption agency thing wants to find the best home for the child. They want to know so much info from you before they actually hand the child over. They want to have two parents who will love them. |

Yes, because of income, stable homing, etc. Couples are always a first priority. |

The most ironic thing - single mothers are talked into giving their babies away - because they're single - yet in some cases - they do actually allow single people to adopt!!
Go figure.
It's a twisted system.
I'm sure you can adopt through Foster care - as those are the kids that really need a loving home.
But please - if you're considering adoption - please do not put the child into long hour day-care - as adoptees need extra love and care - not just another adult abandoning them to others to care for them.
Rejection issues can be exacerbated for adoptees by being plonked into day-care.
Do also read as much as you can - from the adoptee perspective - as those are the one's that have lived their whole lives with adoption.
Here's a great place to start - with many links to blog, websites and books by adoptees -
