Can anyone give me statistics on adoption?
Find answers to your legal question.

Can anyone give me statistics on adoption?

I'm curious on statistics concerning number of babies vs people wanting to adopt. Number of gay couples wishing to adopt. Number of children who are adopted that grow up to be criminals. Number of orphans. Number of orphans who grow up to be criminals. Number of mothers who put their children up for adoption who are criminals. Number of adopted children who are abused. Can you tell me where I can find this information?

Dear Katrina,

Unfortunately, adoption is not very well regulated - nor does the government keep very good records about adoptions. Most adoption statistics are gathered by independent parties and like all statistics of this nature, can be twisted to suit whatever purpose they are intended for by the gatherer.

You can try these sites for some pretty decent information:
http://www.childwelfare.com/
http://www.adoptioncrossroads.org/ginni.html
http://www.amfor.net/
http://www.adoptioninstitute.org/research/adoptionfacts.php
http://darkwing.uoregon.edu/~adoption/topics/adoptionstatistics.htm

Good luck finding the information you are looking for!

Wayne Carp's book 'Adoption in America' has oodles of statistics. You may find it interesting reading. He had access to records that most people don't get to see
