Can i still get a foster care check if i adopt the child?

Once a person adopts they should not be receiving any money from the govt unless there is a debilitating medical issue involved. Even in some of those cases this should be taken care of by your health insurance that you provide. You're the parents now, remember. That includes being completely financially responsible for the child. Just like biological parents.
According to many AP's on here that don't feel that they should "financially" help out mothers struggling, well than they should agree that a-parents that can afford to do without subsidies of any sort should be made a priority over Ap's that need it or are trying to take advantage of it.

I can't believe this is a question, let alone an option for aparents.

If you want to adopt and take full responsibility for a child, then do it.

I would say it depends upon the rules in your jurisdiction. When my daughter was with us as a foster child we got an amount each month for her maintenance expences (about 2/3's of the our total monthly amount) and the other 1/3 was our "skill fee" as foster parents.

Once we legally adopted her the "skill fee" portion stopped but the maintenance payments continued and are now called "supports for perminance". Our jurisdiction continues that portion of the payment for everyone to protect against adoptive family breakdown and the payment increases based upon the age of the child, until they reach 18. In my area this applies regardless if the child has special needs or not.

Needless to say my daughter will have university paid for, if she chooses to go, or at least a good nest egg for her future.

I was an adopted child. I was adopted at age ten. My parents received me when I was 8 years old. After my adoption was finalized, the checks stopped. It is the same as a man adopting ur child. The support checks would stop b/c the other "father" would be relinquished of that responsibility. In this case, the state is like the "father" of the child.

If you adopt a special needs child you will probably be eligible for adoption subsidy.

African Amercian, children are considered special needs,
. The child has a "factor or condition" (uniquely defined by each State) that qualifies him or her as having "special needs." Depending on the State, this factor or condition may include:
Ethnic background
Age
Membership in a sibling group
Medical, physical, or emotional condition or handicap
The factor or condition must prompt the conclusion that the child cannot be placed without providing adoption assistance or medical assistance.
The amount of the assitance varies from state to state.

talk to your worker. it's usually less, but most special needs kids do come with some subsidy money when you adopt them.

not unless they are special needs....because when you are fostering...they are covering for the cost of the child, until they can find that child a loving home to live in forever. Once you adopt them legally...you are taking that responsibility for the rest of your life....and theirs. Why would you still want money from the state if you want that child to be your own. If thats the case...they would just pay every single person money in the world who has children............period.

This will depend on several factors involved such as the age of the child adopting, if the child is part of a sibling group & you are adopting more than one, if the child is considered a minority race or if the child is a special needs child. You can also apply for the subsidy & see. (Never hurts to ask)
Your agency (f you have one) should be able to tell you more.

Probably not, didn't they tell you that in your foster classes? They told us that at least!

In Oregon you apply for the adoption subsidy - and basically it just continues the monthly amount that you had been receiving as a stipend but has a new name.

If the child is considered "special needs" then you are eligible for Adoption Aid, which is the same amount as Foster Care subsidies. I've never heard of anyone who requested it be turned down. Apparently, there is a case to be made that every child within the Foster Care system can be categorized as special needs. Good luck.

You must apply for it before the child is adopted. You can't ever get it if you adopt the child first and then apply. Some people end up with permanent guardianship rather than adopting because they want the check. It's really hard on the kids.
