We visit Australia several times a year to spend time with friends, and our Son has moved there from the U.S. We've met an amazing teenager who has been in foster care in NSW for most of her life and we would love to adopt her and give her some amount of normalcy for the remaining years of her childhood. Is it possible for non-Aussies to adopt Australian children?

Not usually - no.
Children don't do so well being taken away from the country they were born to. Even though Australian and US culture is similar - there are many differences. If it doesn't have to happen - children should stay in the country they were born to.
If you lived in Australia - with permanent residency - perhaps it may be possible - but you would have to check with the government DOCS department in the state she lives in.
(google for instance 'NSW' & 'DOCS'..............DOCS = department of community services)

Are you willing to become a citizen of Australia? Why not move there and foster her, or become her guardian, if she has no other family members to live with? I think it would be even more traumatic to be ripped away from my homeland. She has friends there, school mates, etc. Or, maybe your son could foster her, since he lives there. Just a few thoughts. |

Its likely that you will have to have at least permanent residency. AT most importantly you have to go through DOCS for adoptions in NSW.
The Biological mother HAS to give her consent for any adoption to take place. Even when a child is made a ward of the state it isn't revoked entirely. Has the foster family asked about adoption the teenager? They would get first preference from DOCS since he lives with them.
I suggest your first step to see where you stand in Adoptions from foster care in NSW is get in touch with DOCS. They will tell you what your residency status has to be exactly. You will be required to go through the local adoption assessment if you qualify... It usually takes at least 12 months. The become part of the adoption pool and then placement happens... long process.
Private adoptions are illegal in NSW.
BTW- NSW encourages open adoptions.

If Americans can adopt Chinese children and children from Indonesia (among other places), I'm sure its safe to assume you'd be able to adopt an Australian child. It would take longer and it'll be expensive, but I think it would be worth it to give this teenager a great home! |
