Im a first generation, first year college student and I was wanting to fight for custody with my mom over my 9 year old little sister. Ill have my gpa to help but i don't know how to go about it, like begin it or what'll happen or anything. Any sort of serious input would be welcome and helpful

You can't adopt your little sister unless she is up for adoption.. meaning that she has been taken away from your mother. If your mother is unfit to care for your sister, the first step is to call child protective services. They will see if she's unfit or not - and then you can tell them that you want to be her legal guardian (very similar to adoption but you don't become her "parent"). This whole process will take a while unless it is clearly obvious that your mother can't care for your sister. |

You can call CPS but chances are they will tell you to get an attorney and petition the court for custody yourself. This is tough and the burden of proof is on you since you are making the move to get custody. You will have to prove you are more fit to parent your sister than she is.
If you get custody of her through emergency guardianship......adoption is something else entirely. To adopt, parental rights need to be terminated.
I work in child welfare and the last thing you want to do is involve CPS in your business unless you just have to!! |

Is your mother more unfit than you, and why?
If you can support the child A LOT better than she can (and WELL at that) then you will find it easier.
