Considering adopting a child...?

My name is Karena and I love children. I can't seem to be able to have my own as ive been trying to for about 1 year and a half and no luck. I am getting married in may of this year but my fiance has a felony and im not sure if we will be able to do that because of it. His felony was first considered self defense then our county took over and put it as assault causing bodily injury. He's not a bad person the guy kept pulling guns out on him. anyways we were looking into adoption and im not sure if we can because of that. Does anyone know if that is going to stop us or what we can do to adopt?

As someone else already answered, 18 months of "trying" isn't considered a long time and doesn't necessarily mean you have fertility problems. There are many things to try before giving up on having children.

Secondly, if what you say is true about your fiance's conviction, with the help of an attorney, you may be able to get his conviction reduced, or have his record expunged. I'm not sure of the legal term, but I do know it's possible. It will benefit him to pursue that avenue since it may affect many aspects of his life and your life together, like his career - especially if he wants a job in any government agency, his ability to vote, to volunteer, etc.

Here's information about getting a felony expunged in California:

Or Virginia:

Just google for felony expungement in your state.

Hope this helps! Good Luck!

That criminal record is going to cause you problems I'm afraid. I'm not aware of any jurisdiction were it would be not considered to be a factor.

You need to talk to social services or an agency who deals with adoption as they will be able to tell you the answers. You should also consult with your dr. as to weather or not you can become pregnant, 18 months isn't that long, plus you do know that it might not be you it could be him. As for the felony it will sometimes depend on what degree felony it is. Like I said talk to people who deal with adoption, they know the guidelines and the in's and outs of the process better than anyone.

Most doctors would not consider you being infertile after only 18 months. If your fiance has a felony, I doubt you will be able to adopt. Each state has it's own guidelines as to qualifications for adoptive parents.

the market for babies is very competitive. It doesn't sound like you'd quailify.

Felonies are not always an automatic stop on an adoption. Tell the truth and ask your caseworker. As long as there is no child abuse or neglect then you should still be o.k.

Since it is a felony assault charge then I think that will be an issue. Anything that means a crime against the physical body of anotehr person will probably be a big issue.

He may need to try to get it taken off of his record. That is a big thing to attempt and commonly called expunged (spelling??).

Also, 18 months, as already said, is not along time. Some women try for years and then they get pregnant. Some women quit trying and then they get pregnant. Some women go through fertility treatments and get pregnant......sometimes it is the man who has the issue. You need to see a doctor before assuming you are unable to get pregnant...could be an easy treatment.

Good luck!!
