Depression, adoption allowed?

Can a person who is on SSDI for depression adopt a child? They are open to foster kids, or international kids. If a relative becomes available they may be willing to adopt them, too.
This person wants to have kids but doesn't want to pass on their illness. They also do not know if they could come off the medication while pregnant.
This person would make a great parent, so don't assume just because they are disabled that they can't be a good parent. Lots of kids have parents with depression. This person would like to provide a better home for a child who is already alive, rather than create more.
Does anyone know if this person (single) can adopt? A home with this person would be much better for a child than living in a very poor orphanage in a foreign country.

I believe if their depression is so bad they are unable to work and unmarried it would be pretty unlikely they would be allowed to adopt. The concern would be for the child's continued well being. While the person is under medication there are times that medication can become ineffective. |

Until they can get to the root cause of their depression that is so severe they can not work then it is IRRESPONSIBLE to bring an innocent child into their lives.
I would tell someone who was considering on having a biological child the same. The depression needs to be dealt with before bringing kids into ones life. The normal stressers that come with parenthood may be compunded with someone suffering from depression. I recognize that depression is an illness but children need stable parents. |

People with depression can make good parents but I think if someones depression is so bad that they are not able to work at all should not adopt till they get the depression under control. |

if you're disabled (meaning it's so bad a person can not work) then the chance of adopting is slim.
i don't disagree with you that the person may make a great parent. but if it's so bad to be on disability? i just don't see adoption as a plan. |

Yes, you're right. LOTS of kids have depressed parents. Like me.
I was adopted by a depressed woman. Adopting kids didn't help her depression, and was far from a picnic for us kids.
She sounds like a woman who is incapable of making a healthy choice--and therefore a bad fit to be a mother. |

It’s hard to say and it might depend on the agency. If the person was able to be fine as long as they took their medication and their medication remained updated. Your right depression is an illness and I think it’s smart your friend is not wanting to pass this condition on to another person by having a biological child. As long as your friend could work and provide for a child(ren). |

why not apply anyway and be honest about your position? They will apreciate that and will probably give you a quick answer if you're not eligible. |
