Do have a personality trait/s you attribute directly to being adopted?
|
Is there part of your personality that you feel is the direct result of being adopted? ie separation issues etc?
For parents, do you see issues in your adopted children that you feel are primarily due to being adopted.

From adoption -
1. Intense fear of rejection - from anyone and everyone.
2. The ability to fit in anywhere - to ward off possible rejection mentioned in 1.
3. The need to please. Which stems from 1. and 2.
4. Survival skills - for one to have their heart broken so many times by their mother - and still be a reasonably sane person.
5. Wicked wicked sense of humour - and the ability to laugh at oneself.
(some may say that's somewhat genetic - but I know far too many adoptees with this similar trait to be a coincidence. I think if we aren't able to laugh at the insaneness of adoption at times & the situations we find ourselves in - then we would not be so sane) |

I don't know if its a "personality trait" but I've never felt connected to anyone in my family until I had my own children. I've always felt like half of me is somewhere else, and that I might never find out what is out there. |

Bwahahaha!
The list is too long. Let's just say I have trust, separation and attachment problems. Not one of my non-adoptee pals feels anything close to what I do. |

I have major attachment issues & trust issues. It is very hard for me to attach or trust anybody. And if I do attach or trust someone I am always afraid that they will leave me at any time. It is hard living this way but, not much I can do about it either. It is just the way that I am.

Great Question!
I would have to say that I am able to Disconnect from People Very Well so as to not get hurt easily!
Of Course I am an Adoptee that Suffered a Lot Of Abuse so I am sure that this certainly contributes but I would also say that in my particular case that this comes from being Relinquished as Well. |

Hmm...I don't know. I'm exactly like my dad in personality. Outgoing, talkative, friendly....wish I was more like my mom! lol
I am a bit clingy tho...maybe that. |

Well, not really. I was always a really friendly, talkative person. But, like another person said, i do tend to be a tad clingy early o in a friendship, but that seems to have gone away with the years, as i gained more confidence in myself. |

- The ability to disconnect from people with ease (abandonment/separation issue - I'll leave you before you can leave me)
- The inability to trust those closest to me (while trusting strangers easily) not to mention difficulty in developing close relationships to begin with
- Difficulty overcoming feelings of helplessness/hopelessness (it's hard to pull yourself up by the bootstraps when the straps were removed upon separation)
- Low self-esteem/self-image, control issues... (need to be in control but don't feel worthy or deserving of being in control)
- Tendency to chemical dependency (in my case due to constant administration of phenobarbital for 1st 8 weeks of life outside the womb)
- Have been misdiagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder. This misdiagnosis is far from uncommon in adoptees. Look up the symptoms/behavioral patterns and you'll see why.
There are also parts of my personality which are the direct result of being raised in my adoptive family, whose particular dysfunction spectacularly exacerbated my adoption issues. While many "normal" people (vs. adopted) in America are raised in dysfunctional families, I suspect that a large percentage of adoptive families have a tendency toward particularly adoptee-unfriendly dysfunction. There is extensive research to back up my suspicions. |
