Do you agree with adoption agencies that say single parents can't adopt?

I was planning to adopt a child from China and was told no because I am not married. In my opinion, this is just wrong. I mean%2

@~Andraya~I will not be silenced: Sorry, but I didn't realize a child couldn't have a good life unless they have a mom and a dad. Like I said before, a child that comes from a one parent home is no worse off that a child that comes from a two parent home.

i dont agree with that policy. If a person is capable of being a parent, then why deny them the chance to adopt? Just because two people are married to each other, does not mean they'll be better parents then a single man/woman.
2 parents does not guarantee a happy home. Thats a myth.

It's their country, so they make the rules. Foster care adoption allows single parent adoptions. It is also free and the most ethical route.

I think that single parents should have the same rules/guidelines and couples. If they make the appropriate income, have the proper housing and are acceptable by whatever standards the agency has then i don't see why they couldn't adopt. While some single parents wouldn't be able to provide for the child, there are many single parents who can do just fine. I know the agencies want(or should want) the best possible home for the child and if a single parent can provide that, then that's who the child should go to. Two parents is probably the "ideal" home situation for most agencies it doesn't mean necessarily mean that the child will have a happier life.

1, that's not an agency rule, that's China's rule. Feel free to debate with China their requirements for adoption. Let us know how that works out for ya.

#2, who said anything about a child COMING FROM a single parent home? People are talking about putting a child IN a single parent home. Why should anyone do that when there are perfectly good 2 parent homes available?

#3, the purpose of adoption is to find the best possible home for a child who needs one, not the best possible child for an adult who wants one. The best possible home might just include 2 parents, and money, and a big house, and a pony. That's not for you to decide.

#4, if you're going to adopt through any avenue other than foster care, there are going to be funky restrictions (the foster/adoption restrictions seem to make more sense to me). Deal with it. Or, just don't adopt. That's a viable option.

ETA:
#5, there are TONS of couples adopting. No child is going to go without a home because YOU aren't going to get accepted.

Tasha, I'm not the one who made the rules, and I'm not the only one saying these things. Why was your answer directed at me? That's just weird.

Gaia, if an agency has a rule saying no single parents can adopt they believe that children do better in two parent homes. There are plenty of agencies that won't even review an application if the parent is not married. It's ridiculous to automatically deny someone because they are not married. A good home can also be with one parent, a big house, money and a pony. Its not for you to decide either. Being married doesn't guarantee a child a good home. Adoption is a choice. If a person is trying to adopt it is because they really want children.

sunny
I do agree.

ETA: To the poster who said children of single parents end up being Prez of the US... uh, these are men who were raised by their MOTHERS, with full knowledge of their fathers and other extended family.

How you can compare that to being raised by a stranger in a CLOSED adoption is bizarre to me. You must really under estimate how emotionally damaging a closed adoption really is!

Apples and oranges.

mom_karen1066
why do you need to go to china? there are thousands of kids/babies right here in the united states that need homes and being married is not a requirement. i've adopted seven...ranging from newborn infant to 5 ....now 1-10. all perfectly normal, beautiful children.

It's wrong, but what can you do other than pick another country to adopt from.

I agree with it when it comes to adoption and finding a family for a child.

Children are better off with a supportive mother and father. Not just one.

It depends where you go. Some places will adopt to single parents. I am currently a single mom of two kids and am not done having kid. If the right man does not come along, I will adopt the rest of my kids after I have my career under my feet. I think that Thailand adopts more to single parents. Either way, keep looking. You obviously just have the wrong agency

I don't agree with this rule. For most agencies, a two parent home is more ideal. But, that just is not always the case. Yes, every child deserves a mother and father. But, one is better than none. Married couples and single parents should be held to the same guidelines. I volunteer at an orphanage and deal with foster kids on a day to day basis. This foster home is overcrowded and it is falling apart. You ask one of those kids if they would rather stay there or be adopted by a single parent. There answer want surprise me. I live in the US and the number of orphans/abandoned children that are here is astonishing. Here they don't have a rule that say single parents can't adopt. We get plenty of single parents, as well as couples, ever month looking to adopt children. Someone said it above, that maybe you can consider adopting an older child or a child with special needs. Those are mainly the ones that are left because nobody wants them. They are extremely hard to place.

No. I do not agree with this policy. The world is filled with single parent homes and the children turn out just fine. Some of them even become President of the United States.

Response to Sunny(?)

Ummm, excuse me Sunny but I think you have me confused with someone who is in favor of adoption of any kind. Trust me, I know very well the damage adoption does.

Not sure why you would feel the need to attack someone else's opinion but the question had to do with whether a single person should be able to adopt. If in fact a child is an orphan or abused and there is no other kin able to take the child, I still believe a single parent should be able to adopt that child. That's my opinion and if it's different than yours - so be it.

Geesh, you need to learn to play nice.... there's just way too much nastiness on here.

No, I do not agree with this policy. It is stupid. Do they realize how many children are in the world w/o a place to call home? I would rather have one parent than no parents at home. But, it is there country and they have the right to make their own rules. Even if it is the child who suffers in the end. There are plenty of adoption agencies that don't have that rule, so keep looking. I also agree with you saying that children that come from a two parent home is no better better that children that come from a one parent home. If so, then maybe someone should have passed the memo over to my brother. We came from the same home and parents but that didn't stop him from turning to drugs and getting 6 yrs in prison. So, there you go. Ignore the ignorant comment above.

LovetheLORDfirst
Most domestic adoptions don't care if you're single. You can't be living with someone you aren't married too, but that's for stability reasons and makes sense. Try Associated Catholic Charities, and I hope you'll consider older children too. Good for you on your decision to adopt! God bless!

EDIT: Andraya...silenced told her story in another post. Her adopted mother died 4 years after she was adopted and noone told her bmom. If that happened to me, I'd probably agree with that policy too! BUT, it didn't, so I still am in favor of single people adopting. I have to say I favor single women more than single men because women are more "maternal." Nevertheless, there are many good men out there who have the ability to make great fathers even to children not biologically theirs, especially older children/ teens who need them the most.

I thought adoption was about giving a better life to a child... usually that means a mom and dad, a pool, a pony and plenty of kool-aid.

I do agree with this policy.

But that's what they told my mom and that is what they told me. That our children deserved a mom AND a dad. I'm simply regurgitating agency blech here. Adopt through foster care.

Also if a child can fare just as well in a single parent family why do agencies continue to use the ideal two parent foundation as a way to coerce young women into relinquishing children they would rather parent. Holy double standards Batman, what is ok for you isn't ok for me? WHAT?

Tell that to the NCFA, and to the spreaders of adoption propaganda, and those PAPs (and their 'forever family' doctrine) who would heartedly disagree with you..

BTW... I totally agree with you!
