Do you get paid for fostering?
Find answers to your legal question.

Do you get paid for fostering?

I have no intentions of fostering, I couldn't bring up anyone elses children

But I had heard somewhere before, i think it was on here that you get paid for fostering, I just assumed you got the normal child benefit payment etc, is this all you get or do you get extra

ONCE AGAIN, IM NOT GOING TO FOSTER IM JUST CURIOUS

How much do you get paid? I didn't think it would be classed as a job!!

You do get paid and paid very well.

You need to go on a course to become an approved foster carer. You also need to be able to provide a room for any foster child in your care.

Some children just need to be in foster care temporarily - say for example their mum is in hospital or has had a breakdown or something... it can be traumatising for a child to go into care and being in a nice friendly home with a fully trained foster carer can be less scary.

Some children (particularly babies) thrive in good foster care until they find adoptive parents.

yes you do get paid, it is a job
edit. of course it's a job, they are children with needs if they are in care and you need to complete courses to be deemed suitable etc, i don't know exact amounts but you get paid to do it, the pay will depend on the needs also, so a more difficult child is in a higher band you will get paid more.

You do get money but its more to pay for clothes, fees etc. than a wage. I think (but could be wrong) that's its around £100 a week.

Gabby_Gabby_Purrsalot
They pay you a stipend, which pretty much covers diapers and food for the child. You're not going to get rich fostering and it's not going to provide you with "extra spending money."

I don't really know how to say this, but saying "I couldn't bring up anyone else's children" doesn't sound very good. I think maybe there was a nicer, more polite way you could have put it.
No matter the country, you don't make a profit unless you are neglecting the child SEVERELY.

Yes you get paid but it is no where near what it takes to rasie a child. As for how much it varies from city to city depending on budget and how much in need they are.

My dear "Mom-to-be"....

YES, you do get payed - also in the U.K. On the amount, I'm not certain, but you can contact the childrens-agency to find out exactly ! You sure won't "make a profit", it's just covering the expense for the child's care!
Send you my best wishes for a healthy baby from Germany...Annette***

Yes you do. But there are different levels.

For kids that need "therapeutic care" which are kids that tend to have medical problems or mental health problems and are harder to place, you get the most money.

General foster care: You get a monthly paycheck plus you get clothes allowances every couple of months. The kids are on Medicaid for their health insurance and they get free lunches and breakfast at school.
Also, if the kids want to goto camp or take music lessons or something like that, there is sometimes money for that. Also, there is agencies which help so kids can goto proms, camp, etc. All the things normal kids do.

Kin-ship care gets the less money. But the kids are also on Medicaid and get free meals at school.

BUT ~ MORE MONEY IS SPENT ON ANIMALS IN SHELTERS THAN IS SPENT ON FOSTER CARE!

Foster Care Associates says that the basic rate of pay is £350 a week, although more can be paid if the child has challenging behaviour etc. However, they say that at least one person has to be home all the time (i.e. not working)

I am not a foster parent as of yet, I am looking into the foster to adopt program, but my parent became foster parents to take in my cousins.

Yes you do get a monthly stipend when you are a foster parent. If you are a foster parent with no blood ties to the child placed in your care in my state you get roughly $20.00 a day or $600.00 a month. This is to pay for the children food, clothes, and shelter. Now if it is kinship care where a blood relative is placed in your care the stipend is cut in half or less so $300.00 or so. I am not quite sure why they do that, I am guessing because it is your "family" you take on part of the financial responsibility.

Usually foster kids though are able to recive wic, food stamps, reduced school lunches, etc. Also insurance is paid by the state as long as the child is still listed as being in foster care.

yes the state sends you a check

In the U.S. you get something, but it is very very small. (I think $150 a month). Of course it also depends on what county you are in, and there are 86 counties alone in my state.
