Do you think Jesus would approve of adoption (not foster care) in it's current form?

Why or why not?

Oops, I meant "its".

No. It encourages non-fertile people to envy the fertile.

It encourages non-parents to covet the children of strangers.

It dishonors parents. It is dishonest. It objectifies children.

Children are stolen. They are sold.

It violates the work of the Creator God, the Lord Thy God.

Where love was the guiding motivation, I believe he would have approved.

Where greed, selfishness, and dishonesty were motivators, I believe it would be his reaction to the money changers at the temple all over again.

My Jesus is a little different, I guess. He loves ALL people and wouldn't want so much pain in adoption. He even loves people who twist his love for ALL of us to attack others.

Lets see.......

"Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ***, nor any thing that is thy neighbour's. "

Nope....I guess not since adoption today is all about coveting the children of thy neighbors.

Dear Sunny,

I think he would be APPALLED.
I bet the reaction would be worse than how he felt about the pharisees!!

ETA: I find it amusing that so many people answer with "I'm not Jesus so I can't say." Isn't that the point of the question?! What do YOU think he would say. Surely people (even us non-Christians) know enough about him to be able to hazard a guess!

I seriously doubt that ANY human rights activists (as Jesus was) could approve of the adoption INDUSTRY. No one is condemning the IDEA of adoption. That, in itself, is a lovely and idealistic concept, but the CURRENT BUSINESS that it has become is not at all Christian in its practices.

There ARE positive adoptive situations that I think Jesus would approve of, but they are rather rare and would most CERTAINLY not include people paying THOUSANDS to middle men and tearing apart families or causing suffering. Jesus, if one considers him more than just an exceptional man, was the son of GOD. GOD, who created the families that are ruined by adoption. I don't think he would be too thrilled about the disrespect for his Father's work.

Jesus taught that people should GIVE to the poor, not take from them. His mother was 14 when she had him, so I don't think he would disapprove of young mothers who care for their children. Jesus treated women with RESPECT and encouraged them to SHARE their burdens and joys - not take advantage of each other. Jesus BLESSED the children - he did not inflict needless suffering. Jesus HEALED - he didn't tear people apart. He was a pacifist, he was a community activist, he was compassionate, supportive and selfless.

I think that I can SAFELY GUESS that he would INDEED take issue with SEVERAL of the current practices of adoption. And I think he'd be REALLY PISSED about how much of it is done "in his name".

ETA2: Jesus was not adopted. If one believes that he is the son of God, then Joseph was his STEP-FATHER. God was ALWAYS present in Jesus' life. That does not sound like adoption to me at all.

Thank you for excluding foster care adoption, although I think there are some who have saviour complexes when adoption from foster care,,,,,but i digress.

I do not think Jesus would approve of adoption in its current form. I think Jesus would not tear a family apart, but have his people provide love and opportunity to keep families together.

I also think he would believe very much in the village to raise a child, as all children are "children of God". If we truly had a village to help people raise their children, then adoption would be not needed per se.

I though have to go think of the Creator (Aboriginal Spirituality), and the Inuit practice of custom adoption as regular practice.

Makes me wonder....

ETA: I asked my husband this question, and he said "wasn't Jesus adopted?" Maybe by Joeseph but the father really really wasn't in the picture!

No, but if Robin Hood were concerned with fertility, he would. Take from those with, and give to those without. That is pretty much what they are doing (although in opposite, due to some people giving up children due to lack of funds, giving children to those who pay many thousands in order to adopt) at the big agencies.

I think Jesus (as a non-christian like myself would understand) would be abhorred at the state of our current infant adoption system. He is all about love and tolerance and family. Yet that is quite the opposite of what agencies seem to be concerned with. They are more into dollars, status, and coercion.

Well, if Jesus is conscious of anything these days, he can ring me up and we can smoke a bowl together. About 2000 years too late, methinks.

In all seriousness, no, I don't think any conscious sentient being (whatever you'd like to call it) who cared for or loved humanity would approve of a lot of the things going on down here, and the baby trade would be among those things.

Carol c
I don't think He would approve in it's current form.
..it's so sad and wrong to separate mother and child. I cannot believe that Jesus who was wise and a respected prophet, would support a system that is usually not in the best interest of the child

I do not think he would at all.

Because Jesus was not, to my knowledge, about sundering families with lies and causing unnecessary pain.

NO.

To inflict harm on children would certainly NOT be something that he would have wanted out of human beings.
We are made to reproduce those that are genetically linked to us.
We are supposed to parent those children within our own clan.
THAT is how it should be.

Nope, I think it would tick him off. Adoption is no longer about the children, money changes hands, it serves to provide people in want with a baby, not a baby truly in need of a home with a set of parents. Rape, murder, and kidnapping happen to fuel the baby mill. There are prices on babies heads, whether it be described as fees or not. Lawyers and agencies profit off the misery of others. I think adoption in its current form is one big fat mess.

To me it seems like adoption in the state it is now is an affront to the commandments. I'm no longer Christian, haven't been in a long while, but Jesus as a figure was all about love and family. I can't see these practices being ok with him.

I can not see Christ being happy that babies have such a hefty price on them and what’s worse the price defer often based on what race a baby is or what their health situation may be. That anyone would even have to pay the prices some people pay to give a home, love and parents to a baby who needs it. That should be a free gift. I can not see Christ being happy if someone is pressured into placing their child/baby for adoption.

Joseph was Jesus's legal father. Both of Jesus’s (earthly/legal) parents had to be of the Royal House of David.

Yes, Jesus was crazy passionate about social justice.. see what He says:

34 “Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the Kingdom prepared for you from the creation of the world. 35 For I was hungry, and you fed me. I was thirsty, and you gave me a drink. I was a stranger, and you invited me into your home. 36 I was naked, and you gave me clothing. I was sick, and you cared for me. I was in prison, and you visited me.’

37 “Then these righteous ones will reply, ‘Lord, when did we ever see you hungry and feed you? Or thirsty and give you something to drink? 38 Or a stranger and show you hospitality? Or naked and give you clothing? 39 When did we ever see you sick or in prison and visit you?’

40 “And the King will say, ‘I tell you the truth, when you did it to one of the least of these my brothers and sisters, you were doing it to me!’

Matthew 25:34-40

I think Jesus would not care about whether the adoption process was efficient or even fair, I think He would just care that we were helping children in need.

Just a Mom
You know, I was never so much for the What Would Jesus Do. I figure WWJD didn't apply to me as I am probably not doing anything Jesus would do. So, I guess I really don't know. Christians tell me that Jesus hates me and wants me to burn forever and if that is what Jesus is really like, maybe he WOULD approve of adoption in its current form.

Don't get me wrong, I love Jesus and all, but He is probably pissed with the whole gay thing. Just a guess.

We are all GODS children!!!!!! He would always think it was Good for us to take care of each other!! When this Earth was started God was the only man and then there was Adam and Eve, so you see, we are really related to each other!!! Plain and simple!!!

Philippa
Absolutely not as it's about money not love

ringostarr9911
First off, I'm not Jesus. So I don't know exactly for sure. :)

Anyway, I think the idea of adoption is nice. Some people just can't take care of their kids. Like if you had some kind of disease where you were sick all the time you wouldn't be able to do much for your kids. Most people want the best for their kids so they put them up for adoption so a family who is able to take care of them can.

Another part of adoption, I just have never thought was right though. Some parents put their kids up for adoption because they "hate" or "can't handle" their kids. Those people are throwing away God's most precious gift.

All in all, I think Jesus would aprove of certain parts of adoption. The I-can't-take-care-of-my-kids-cause-I'm-d... thing, I think he'd be okay with that. The whole I don't want my kid thing though, thumbs down from Jesus. Also, remember that Jesus was adopted by his foster father Joesph. Jesus is the son of God. Soo, I would think Jesus likes adoption somewhat

hope this answers your question :D

maccrew6
Well.. baby Moses was "adopted" by the princess without lawyers, courts, paperwork, homestudies or anti adoption protesters..... so who knows?

friends R gifts we give ourself
i honestly don't know how to answer this, i mean the argument that God know before we are born what will happen to us who our parents are etc is there and if we have the parents we are suppose to then adoption is wrong in that sense, but God knows what will happen to us so he knows we will be adopted and that is what he intended, you could go either way for this one and honestly i don't know God's opinion on it but it is a good question.

jennifer K
i dont think he would care including the fact that we are helping his children its better than abortion. plus it helps all those poor orphaned kids as well

Daisey Duck
It is not for anyone to try and say how Jesus would feel as no one knows
