Do you think we can adopt?

Do you think we can adopt?

We live in canada and want to adopt.
I know its a little early to make the decision to adopt but last year my husband was diagnosed with cancer it was brief and he is no cancer free for the last 11 months. We have been trying to get pregnant since november with no luck. And we are not sure if it is due to me or my husband and his chemo/radiation. Is it possible if we can't get pregnant is it possible that we could adopt or would we be passed over because of his health
Additional Details
we do have 2 children already so i have been pregnant before just a wacky cycle since my last who is not 1.5years old

I don't know where in Canada you are although the rules are similar in each Province. There may be minor differences but they shouldn't make a difference.

With that having been said, my wife and I have adopted twice, once through Ontario (the child was from overseas but we had to finalize/formalize the adoption in Ontario once we moved back to Canada) and this last time was in Alberta.

During the process in both Provinces we were not asked any specific questions about health nore did we have to get a medical check up or provide a Doctors note. We were asked about our medical history and we were free to disclose or not disclose what ever we wanted. I'm NOT telling you to hide any of your history because if you get caught you will be excluded right off. I am saying however that you are free to disclose what ever you choose and while doing so you are free to provide as much or as little info as you deem necessary.

Your husband's health, as well as yours, will no doubt be a factor and of interest to the agency but as long as you are healthy at the time of application there is no way for anyone to predict the future and it cannot be held against you. I could be killed in a car accident tomorrow the same way as someone's cancer could return or some other medical condition could come up. I know of two openly gay men who adopted in Ontario and one of them was HIV positive at the time of their application and it still went through.

If you want to adopt, good luck and God bless. Drop me a line through this site if you are working within either Ontario or Alberta and want more info.

CutThroat
YES! It is very possible for cancer Survivors to adopt. I celebrated my 5 year Survivorship this past May (CutThroat = thyroid cancer) and am traveling to bring home our second Korean child in just a week!

There are several countries who are accepting of cancer Survivors prior to the 5 year mark, but most prefer 5 years cancer free. And sometimes Survivors are able to get a wavier from the country because their cancer was a treatable and rarely fatal one (such as mine, but I ended up having 3 surgeries over 18 months) or if there is a waiting child that you are drawn to.

Your best resource would to be to call adoption agencies directly and find out A) what their rules are about Survivors and B) what the rules are of other countries and Survivors. It may be that domestic adoption will be an excellent choice for your family. In the US, Suvivors sometimes have an easier time adopting domestically.

Best of luck to you!
