Does it seem strange to you that there seem to be several new people here all saying the same thing? For instance I've read two different people state verbatim that homestudies are needed in private adoptions which is absolutely false.
What do you think these people gain by posting untruths on Y!A?
Why are they here? Additional Details Wow You KNOW people who adopted privately? You know them? And that makes you an expert on every law in every state? Wow! Incredible.
No really, in the truest sense of the word. Incredible.

Considering that I know for a fact that one of the largest adoptions agencies in the US employs people to spy on adoptee forums and post nasty comments on adoptee blogs - nope, I don't trust anyone here that works in the industry. |

I am extremely thankful that private adoptions are illegal in the UK and have been for many years. I only know of one case which happened in Scotland many years ago and it is virtually impossible for the fmother to try and trace her child.
I have no knowledge of proceedure of private adoption because of this so would be very wary of them. |

I think the laws vary. I gave up a baby for adoption in 1994, but could not do it without knowing the family. It was a private adoption, and there was no home study, we just went through and attorney and a judge. I am still fine with the family and we are in contact at least weekly.
My husband on the other hand was adopted in 1969, and the family treated him like a farm hand. They did not want a child, they wanted a worker. He never even had a birthday party growing up, so yes, I can agree that a home study is in the best interest of the children whether adopted privately or from an agency. |

I am not an adoption worker, however I have adopted twice (China and foster care) and know several families who adopted privately and all had home studies. A home study is even required if adopting a family member. So I'm curious, in what situations are they not required?
ETA: Um, have a latte or something. I just said that those I know who adopted privately had to have a home study. You stated that it was "absolutely false", so I was just wondering in what situations a home study was not required, which is a completely valid question based on your assertion to the contrary. I am also Canadian, so perhaps the laws are different here. |

Isabel,
Every state has different laws regarding private adoptions. In Minnesota all adoptions, private and agency require a homestudy. The only exceptions are certain relatives. See the link below.
I live in Illinois. Here home studies are required for all private adoptions where the child is coming from another state.
I don't think these people are necessarily posting untruths. They may just be posting truths that are different from those in your state. |

All I can state is that I was a foster parent and needed a home study and that international adoptions need a home study. Perhaps not all states have the same adoption laws? |

Not only does it seem strange, it seems very creepy. I would venture to say there are several people here who work for either lawyers or agencies. The ones who are looking for babies themselves are usually pretty obvious about it.
Check out some of the newer people & where they have posted-in the pregnancy section, and in the teen sections, too.
I smell pap or baby broker. |
