Additional Details ETA Flying High: Yes you are right in so many ways. I have spent many hours trying to figure out how to protect my family from the disruption(and disruption does not really describe it), while at the same time protecting my son from himself. I remember my husband standing in a mall parking lot, restraining him as he was screaming and kicking and trying to bite himself, while people walked by glaring, thinking my husband was abusing or hurting him. He has come a long way in the past two years and many of the symptoms have dissipated, but still, it feels like it will never end. My fear is not just for me, but for his future. He is so beautiful from the inside out and he deserves better than this. We no longer use a CYC worker, as he is doing better, but only better in relation to where he was, not in comparison to a child without RADS. Thank you for being so candid in your answer. For the first time, I have felt not alone in this.

It's been tough. Ever see the Army commercial, the toughest job you'll ever love. So goes with parenting a child who suffers from such trauma. You'll never be able to understand why a child struggles with such a disorder, but nowadays, there's lots of resources out there to help families such as yours. One thing I found out early on is, as a parent of such a child, you will be persecuted by the public because of the child's behavior. Never the birth parents, never the child. Just you are the one easiest to blame. You find out quickly how to narrow down your life for the sake of the healthy ones left in the family. |

My son was diagnosed with RAD at 5 years old shortly after he came to live with me. He is now 12 and has been in therepy and medication his whole life. He has never learned to trust and has been acting out severly. 28 days ago we entered him into a boys home for a 9-12 month program that is our last chance at helping him. He has been to a mental hospital and a day treatment program throughout his life seeking help as well. He was in a special class for emotionally impaired children last year as well. Nothing has worked not even a little bit. We have done everything and love him beyond words. We miss him so much as he is 5 hours away. It has really put a strain on our family and now we are working with our other 2 boys to repair some damage done by their brothers problems.
I do love my son so much. He is sweet and so helpfull. There are TONS of great qualities about him. However, the bad parts are so bad that he cannot live here anymore.
I will not adopt a child diagnosed with RAD again. That is far worse than even my daughters blindness or any other special needs I have come across. Sorry |
