Does anyone know what support is available to guardian caregivers in nj?

I am trying to help someone who is undergoing extreme financial difficulty. He is the biological father of his daugher and has acquired guardianship (not adoption, foster care or kinship) of her 6 year old brother, due to the mother's rights being terminated. The 6 year old is not his biological son, hence the guardianship. I'm curious what type of guardianship support, subsidies or compensation he might be able to receive.

Dear Jas,

As a guardian, he would have been able to collect child support if the mother's rights hadn't been terminated. If the child's biological father's rights have not been terminated, he could collect from him (or his SSI benefits if he is deceased). Note that if he chooses to pursue child support, there is a possibility that he can be required to provide visitation if the biological father asks for it but he would have to be proven unfit by a Court in order to have his guardianship overturned and if the father has been absent, that will be very hard to do. (In other words, your friend might have to let the father visit but your friend would still retain custody.)

There are several programs to assist guardians as well as guardianship organizations to help provide support and recommend resources. Here are some links that you can pass on to your friend.

http://www.guardianship.org/resources.htm
http://www.cwla.org/advocacy/2006legagenda09.htm

There are also tons of grants, scholarships, food and housing assistance programs for single parents, guardians, students, etc. available all over the web. Help your friend run some searches and I bet you can find a program that will help!

Good luck to him and the children! I hope that you find multiple places to assist your friend in providing the best possible care for the kids!
