Does anyone know when the national adoption foundation gives out its grants?

I find the process of giving money to adopt appalling.

If you can't afford it on your own, (a) adopt from foster-care where the kids really are in need and which is free or (b) don't adopt.

Honestly, if you cannot afford the adoption expenses on your own, how are you going to afford 18+ years of *raising* the child?

If fees really are a problem for you (as they would have been for me when I adopted), look into foster care in your area. (I will be happy to help you locate your DCFS office if you tell me what state you live in.) There are thousands of children waiting for families to love and take care of them all over this country...and adopting one or more of them is virtually cost-free. I adopted my son from foster care when he was 2-1/2 and can't imagine loving him any more than I do -- despite the fact that I didn't adopt him as an infant.

Wow, what is so appalling about receiving a grant to adopt a child? Why should getting financial assistance to do something good be a bad thing? How does anyone even know what age child she's planning on adopting? In some countries, adopting an older child is almost as expensive as adopting an infant. I've seen rates of more than $20k to adopt in China, Ethiopia, and even in the US. Just because a person can't fork over $20k in a lump sum doesn't mean the person can't afford to raise a child for 18 years. Some of you are heartless. Who knows, she'd probably be a wonderful mother and would raise the child in a healthy environment!

Also, when you foster a child, you also get financial assistance from the system, and fostering is not always a good thing. I know people who will tell you horror stories about the fostering system. Not only that, but you get attached to the child or v.v. and then they rip the child away from you for whatever reason. The girl I know had a foster mother who had the other three girls in the house beat her up because se came in late or spoke back.

Barbara, don't let heartless comments keep you from fighting for that grant and getting that child. You should call the agency and ask them. And GOOD LUCK!!! I applaud you on your decision to adopt!
