Does the ANTI ADOPTION movement have cult-like qualities?
Find answers to your legal question.

Does the ANTI ADOPTION movement have cult-like qualities?

Please, this is a very serious question. I have been doing some research about this. All opinions are welcome and I do hope that some will speak out in honesty. If you go on to anti adoption websites you would be simply amazed by the propaganda.

theres propaganda on both sides. My beef with the anti adoption people is how they claim they are putting all points of view on the table then they block you and have your answers deleted if your opinion varies even the slightest. So yeah if my memory serves me right withholding information is one of the characteristics of a cult.

No, the anti-adoption movement is simply standing up for the biological family. The natural family is what used to be norm, and this was not questioned. It was once respected.

We are now living in a time when our government and many groups and private individuals express the view that family does not need to consist of biologically related people. In this view of family, genetic connectedness has no particular value, parents and children can be unrelated, and this should not be seen as unusual. Bonds created in pregnancy may be dismissed and promoting family separation is part of the pro-adoption propaganda.

The anti-adoption movement sees this casual acceptance and promotion of natural family destruction as horrific. Their indignation deserves respect.

Nope, I don't think so. No more or less then any other movement. Sure people are passionate about their stance and beliefs but when I look at the definition of a cult I don't see those qualities in any of the various definitions.

We are not anti-adoption, we are for adoption reform. There is a big difference, so the answer is no.

First of all, Ollie, what websites are you reading that you decided are Anti-Adoption? I would be interested in viewing these so subversive and so magnetic websites that drew you to them. Please list the links as Yahoo Answers allows you to do at the end of your post. There is a section in edit where you can add them so that we, too, can see these places that are so compelling to you and share in your amazement at their propaganda. I guess it would probably compare to "Birthmother, Good Mother" put out by the NCFA to entice mothers to surrender so that they can be the good mother for their children. What kind of propaganda is that, right!?

I have read your supposedly serious and questioning posts for some time now, Ollie, and you really are not fooling anybody with your coy act. You intend to stir the pot, and cause problems and have an overwhelming need to see your name on the screen. So be it. Enjoy. People will get tired of responding to you and that will be the end of that.

The anti adoption movement consists of a lot of people who think for themselves. That does not define a cult and in fact cults discourage people thinking for themselves or analyzing cult materials. The anti-adoption movement from what i have seen, from the inside, is where many people end up once they realize that human rights abuse, coercion, fraud, and human trafficking violate a heck of lot of moral codes and hurt a lot of people. Even the United Nations has expressed grave concerns about the baby market here.

Now, if you take the pro-adoption movement, headed by the propagandistic NCFA that conducts market research on how to "best sell" adoption, you can find a lot of cult-like behaviors. Including their recent research on how to get more mothers to surrender their babies.

I know anti-adoption people who have received threats on their lives and even one activist whose house was firebombed. Adoption is a "sacred cow" in America and you don't dare speak out against it. Note the high emotions generated here in "Yahoo Answers."

no i don't think so. All movements have those sites, so you cant judge all people in a particular movement by a few websites.

By that logic, you could say the womens right movement is a cult. You see where i'm going?

Don't judge a book by its cover, or a movement by a few websites.

No.

They're people who have grown up who now have the courage to speak out against all the stereotypes of adoption being perfect or the loving choice by default. They have the courage to think for themselves and go "against the grain" even if it doesn't fit society's conceived notions.

Like:

"The adopted child is just like your own biological kid!"
"Any kid will experience teasing while they grow up - adoptees aren't immune to this."
"So what if they don't retain the language of origin? They can always seek it out themselves as an adult if they want to."
"It doesn't matter if another woman gave birth to YOUR child. YOU are the one who is raising him. That other woman couldn't even take responsibility for her own kid so she's obviously unimportant."
"Look! You can SAVE A CHILD!!!"

And agencies sprout propaganda just as much as the anti-adoption movement does.

No more so than anti-anything;

anti War
anti abortion
anti search and reunion people . . . (cough)
anti whatever

Some people hold beliefs that ohers either agree or disagree with. It's life

What like the propaganda plastered all over ANY adoption agency website? I think you need to back away from the puter...

And NO I don't think there are cult like qualities.

sunny
Hardly.

People who join cults are sheep who can't think for themselves.

I think most adoptees and first parents who know that most adoption is unnecessary and cruel are quite the opposite.

They usually people who have searched and found. They are some of the most evolved, self-actualized people I've ever met.

The quality you're zoning in on is our zealousness.

What can I say? We've been done wrong.

Um... not really. There is no apparent single charismatic leader, no defined religious dogma, and no attempt to isolate members from friends and family.

Any political or social position that is firmly held will have strong opinions voiced-- and probably some level of propaganda is inevitable. But while I disagree with the anti-adoption position (I support reform but not the elimination of adoption,) I wouldn't describe the people who adhere to it as dangerous or cult-like... just holding strong beliefs that I personally don't agree with.

yeahright
Sometimes the fringe is a little out there--but so are the manic I am going to extremes to become a mom fertilty PAP pick my family over the other ones please, nothing based on reality sites.

Anything in extremes wig me out.

I can see how serious it is. Like a clown doing his act - seriousness hiding a great big fat joke.

Of course the so called "anti-adoption" movement doesn't have cult like qualities. How stupid. Just because a person is anti-adoption doesn't mean they are suddenly in a cult. It just means they have seen the light and don't want to shut up about it. I would be more concerned about the fact the truth is being covered up by PRO adoptionists; maybe that is a movement that has cult like qualities? And what would you call propaganda? People's stories of what happened to them? That is truth and you just cannot stand seeing it so blatantly out there for the rest to see the ugliness of adoption.

Neil
It seems to.

That doesn't mean that some of the participants/supporters aren't healthy, honest, reasonable people with real points to make.

A lot of things have cult-like qualities, from the Republican (or Democratic) parties to La Leche League, from Mothers Against Drunk Driving to Alcoholic Anonymous, from the US Marine Corps to International Answer, and the various cliques here.

SJM
Removing an infant from its family, changing its identity, replacing its parents, and concealing any record of the events before the child reaches a state of cognizance THEN ridiculing said child for wanting to know and expose the truth of its reality is cult-like behavior.

Doublethink: "The power of holding two contradictory beliefs in one's mind simultaneously, and accepting both of them....To tell deliberate lies while genuinely believing in them, to forget any fact that has become inconvenient, and then, when it becomes necessary again, to draw it back from oblivion for just so long as it is needed, to deny the existence of objective reality and all the while to take account of the reality which one denies — all this is indispensably necessary."

2 + 2 = 4, Ollie. Adoption is cult-like behavior.

Interestingly, I did not see any mention of God or gods or comparing experiences with biblical figures, like....lets say... um...moses.
I did not not even particularly find it as disturbing as many of the questions I have read on here from um...lets say...those who use "God" to prove a point....hmmmm.

IDK!!
You're right, those sites are shocking and full of propaganda. It's seem like the people who put those sites up are very hurt people and are using drama and extreme cases to get their points across. Some claim that for someone to even think about adopting that they must have something majorly wrong with them.

That being said, it's just as bad as the sites the spew out propaganda about why mothers should place their children to a "better" home.

BOTH are just as sickening.

I think the most valuable thing you can give a parent considering adopting for their child is HONESTY, if that mean showing them resources to keep their child or options if they do choose adoption. BOTH groups lie, BOTH groups have an agenda, neither group seems to actually CARE about what is best for children, just what is best for the parents the represent or their selves who may have been wounded by adoption.

If you keep looking at these sites, you start to see through the BS and actually swing the other way. Like the site that lists all the adoptees who grow up to murder or the APs who murder their kids. It was very reminiscent of Bible thumping saying "see this is the crap adoption leads to" as if it were even the "norm", forget about all the kids who are wounded by those related to them. Although I found a lot of the info helpful, the extreme view were just too much.

crazychickizback
yeah it's totally freaky. I clicked on a link a certain person posted on here once and omg its freaky. those people are off their meds or something

Family is more to blame than the adoption agencies. These organizations are like vultures waiting for a weak link. And it's sad that the families of the unborn often don't step in as a loving unit. Adoption , on one hand is a money making business. I looked into adopting a teenager, since my kids are grown and have a large home. I didn't care the race or gender. I just know their are sooo many teens out there that need homes quickly. Well, for starters, they want a whopping ten thou. And some adopted children have been taken back by force, thru the courts, by the family that decided they wanted the child after all. Scary. But to those ladies out there who choose to hand over their baby so they can have a better chance at life, you rock.

Nexra
There's an anti-adoption movement?

Sophie
Yes, you will see similar language and brain-washing techniques in the many blogs out there.
