My DH and I are adoptive parents. Both our children were adopted thru DFS. I was talking to another foster mother who has been fostering a little boy since he was 5 weeks old, and he is now 4. He has finally become available for adoption and she was asked if she would adopt him, but she said she can't right now because she can't afford it. Her husband lost his job in April, and apparently, since you don't get much support after adoption, they can't afford to do it. She says her worker told her that she had 3 months to give an answer and then they would start looking for a new adoptive family for this boy.
What is your opinion on this situation? Do you think the boy should stay with these people, or go where he can be adopted?

Yeah it happens quite often. Sadly, children are taken from foster homes where they are adjusted when it's time to make a permanent plan. Heartbreaking. The child is quite attached and moving him will not be in his interests, but not being in a permanent placement is also not in his interest.
It used to happen quite a bit more, a decade ago but they added financial help to encourage foster families to adopt. They would get the same monthly stipend after they adopt as they do now, plus medical, if he is considered special needs. All AA children are automatically considered special needs for placement purposes. Caucasian children, I think is case by case but older ones qualify for it.
He should have had a permanency plan in place as a toddler. It is not supposed to take this long anymore to get decisions made for children. |

Hopefully it will turn out he will be adopted by this family--the only family he has ever really known. In a majority of states the adoptive parent continues to get the same board payment following adoption -along with the medical card. If the child is special needs the board payment ck is almost 3 times a regular ck for the child with all kinds of aids and supports and services in place before the adoption is granted. If she chooses not to adopt then the child will be moved to an adoptive home where a permanency plan can be carried out.
During the past 15 yrs I have known of one case where the kids were not adopted by their foster parents---this out of hundreds of adoptive cases. |

In a perfect world, he'd stay with the only family he's ever known.
Hopefully, it will all work out. |
