Finding birth parents?

i am 19 years old, and was adopted shortly before my first birthday so the family i have now is all ive ever known, but i feel meeting my birth parents would be good for me.

is there a good way to find them, i believe i have their names somewhere, the legal papers from the adoption i believe but how do i find them without asking my parents for help, they are touchy on the subject and have been nothing but good to me, so i dont want to hurt them in anyway :]

thanks.

You can either get your original birth record and/or apply for non-identifying information, depending on where you were born.

If you modify your question to indicate where you were born and adopted, there is more specific help I can post for you x

ETA Please don't feel guilty about your parents. This is your journey, not theirs. I'm so sorry they are touchy about it.

ETA Oregon records have been open since 1998! Go ahead and apply for your birth records!

HOW SHOULD APPLICANTS ORDER?
Birth Record Order Form

Applicants who request records should clearly identify themselves as an "ADOPTEE SEEKING A PRE-ADOPTION BIRTH RECORD." Without this information we will send the current legal record. Enclose a $15 non-refundable search fee payable to Oregon Health Division. Include your current legal birth record information:

* Full legal name (after adoption)
* Date of birth
* Place of birth
* Adopted mother's full maiden name
* Adopted father's full name

Each order should show the adoptee's mailing address and daytime telephone number. Our office will call if we find the applicant has not given us correct and complete record information that matches the legal birth certificate. Pre-adoption birth records may only be ordered by the adoptee and will only be mailed to the adoptee or their legal representative. Attorneys should include a written statement of whom they represent and the current legal birth record information listed above. Anyone else ordering needs a permission note with a notarized signature of the adoptee to show they are representing the adoptee.
Mail requests to:

Oregon Health Division

Portland, OR. 97232
Phone: 503 731-4000

try with your birth father first.. if you have their names and where were adopt from, go with the internet and see if he is on there..

birth mothers have more of a chance to change there last names.. divorce and marriage.. things like that..

Go to Borders and look at some books on adoption. THey have some that are great help in negotiating the reunion process. They look at all three sides and the issues related to each. Unfortunately, many adoptive parents are weird about this, thinking it means they were failures or bad parents. They don't understand that not knowing is such a burden to many adoptees.

Maybe if you phrase it like you would like to thank your birth mom for giving you up, and want to let her know you are okay. Try to include your adoptive parents however you can. Maybe ask your parents if they would like to write a letter too or whatever seems helpful.

Remember. You have thought about this your whole life, and probably imagine the reunion being happy and warm. Your parents will need time to adjust realize that you will not stop loving them or what they did, or drop them just because you now know your other parents.

Give them time to come around. This is a big change. THe older we get the harder change becomes.

Ir they truly come to understand how important this is to you they won't stop you. In the mean time realize there will be some tense moments to work through.

Good Luck
