Finding my brother?
Find answers to your legal question.

Finding my brother?

I just found out my mother got pregnant when she was 13 and gave the boy up for adoption.
Being his half-sister, would I have any rights in trying to find him?

Of course you do! He's your brother. However, a lot of it depends on what state the adoption took place in. Some states have laws in place to assist siblings; others don't. Also it matters if the adoption was a private adoption, or if your older brother was placed through an agency. Some agencies will assist with siblings searches; others won't. Can you maybe edit your question a bit to let us know if this was a private or agency adoption, if it was an agency - then which agency, and what state the adoption took place in?

You most definitely can and should register with Soundex. You can download their registration form from here:

http://www.isrr.net/

Also you can review the state by state laws at this site:

http://adopteerights.net/nulliusfilius/?page_id=39

Finally you may want to look into a good search group. There are a lot of state-specific search groups on Yahoo, so if you go to Yahoo groups and search for 'adoptee search (state name)' you can find one for your state. A few nationwide search groups that are very helpful are:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/SoaringAngels/
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/adoptionregistrymagazine/

Good luck!

Of course you have rights as a natural family member and are fully entitled to find him.Gather as much information that you can and then contact the proper authority in your area to start your search.Just remember though that he might not know about his natural family so don't be too pushy in wanting contact until he makes his feelings about this known.ALL THE SAME I HOPE YOU FIND HIM AND EVERYTHING WORKS OUT FOR THE BOTH OF YOU

I don't know about the rights part about it, but you should be 100% able to go looking for him. I have a half sister that I never met, but knew about, and just last year she found me on myspace (apparently she knew about me too and was looking) so I don't think it would be hard to look for him, if you know his name, or b-day, or where he was adopted from, or any of that info. I'm sure no one would mind if you did...
Good luck :)

Yes, but the burden and cost rest upon your shoulders, alone. Take courage and follow your heart. He is more than worth it. Enjoy.

there is no as such rights that you cant do this, if you think yourself as a sister then, you should try to find your brother.

I don't think so. He's not your son, he's your brother. He's his own man. Maybe you can ask a lawyer.
