How have you helped your children deal with race issues. Do or did they ever talk about how they feel regarding being of a different race then his/her a-family. What things have you done to help your child deal with race issues. What is your experience?

While we are a different race than our children, members of my extended family are the same race. So, they've been an invaluable resource from everything to questions about hair and skin care, confronting racism issues, even role models.
Outside of that, we have friends of the same race of my children, look to incorporate positive images of their race in our everyday life. We've read many, many books on the subject.
I think it also helps that my children are biological siblings. This way, there is not only one non-white face in the family picture.
ETA: Oh, I do take my daughter to an ethnic hair stylist. We've been doing microbraids. Although it's not inexpensive and is pretty much an all-day affair, it is easily managed, the style lasts a long time and her hair looks beautiful and she feels positive about it.
That is something that really needs to be addressed, especially with girls. It's hard to feel good about yourself when your hair doesn't look good. I think it's so important to self-esteem. |

My husband is Native American. I am Caucasian. We have kids who are Caucasian, Native American, half Native half African American and some who are African American. My kids laughingly call us the United Nations and have requested we get a Hispanic and Oriental representative. They are great kids who all look different but seem okay with it. We do a lot to try to keep all of them connected to their roots and also just let them know it is okay to be who they are. (but that is not just about color also just where they are at and what they want.) Our kids are all former foster kids and for most of them they are just really glad to be a family and have permanency. Our oldest had 13 placements before his adoption. I do know the one thing that my kids hate is when people ask if we are a daycare. They answer "NO we are a family". |

No i havent adopted out of my race but i have 2 kids that are biracial... I live in a community where biracial kids are normal... Every time i go out, i run into another biracial family..... I havent had any problems. |
