For parent who have adopted/fostered addicted babies...?

I have no idea, but in infants who were born addicted to meth, did their teeth come in weird, or not in order? My son has beautiful teeth, but they come in top first, and not from front to back. He's 15 months, with 2 sets of molors, and just the front bottom 2. I'm wondering if this has anything due to being born addicted. Sorry I asked in this section, however, not many meth addicted moms answer in the toddler section.

I agree with Lou. Our pediatric DDS informed us the baby teeth are really an indicator of prenatal care or abuse. We are hopeful that his permanent teeth will be stronger however; right now he is so behind schedule. There haven't been enough longitudinal studies on babies exposed to meth to say anything for sure but have you ever seen the teeth of a non-fetus who uses meth, it's not a far stretch to believe that it could impact the fetus too. I wish you luck and hope for a positive outcome! Take care.

While I didn't get my son right from the hospital - I will add my two cents anyway. My son was exposed to meth almost everyday after his birth - this we have an admission for from mom - but she never did admit to using during her pregnancy - it's only speculated. He has horrible teeth. His permanent teeth are very small and at the age of 7 has about 14 cavities. He will always have issues with cavities no matter how much we brush / floss. We work close with his dentist and give very little sugary foods / drinks. His phyciatrist can see the "use" in his eyes as they are also spread far apart - we just thought he looked like daddy!!!

There can be a great deal of affect on teeth with prenatal Alcohol Exposure.. Do you know if the baby was also exposed to Alcohol at any moment at any time prenatally?

I have never heard of teeth being affected by pre-natal use of meth. I looked it up briefly, but there is nothing that I can find. There can be many other factors for why the teeth come in differently, having nothing to do with exposure. Our child was addicted and has developmental delays, but his teeth look great and came in fine. Perhaps you should speak to a dentist about it or your pediatrician.

My son's teeth are developing in a strange was. His dentist says that his delayed dental development is related to his prenatal conditions. We went to a children's dentist at children's hospital. Pretty much what he said is that it the child is physically delayed, then they could have other delays. Alcohol does cause dental delay and for teeth not to even develop. If your child was exposed to meth, then it's not too far fetched to think he was also exposed to alcohol. The dentist will poke around and see if he has teeth buds, they can also do Xrays if you are worried, we didn't do xrays.

We were told that he didn't have his 2 year molars at his 3 year visit. Then out of nowhere they popped in. woo hoo.

My parents are foster parents and have raised over 175 pre-exposed infants. No, meth does not affect the order the teeth come in. Every infant/toodler is different. When it comes to the appearance of the teeth again every infant/toodler is different, it has nothing to do with meth exspoure.

The only issues that we have encountered are dental rot.
my boys are not old enough to have much more noticeable yet .

but no other dental issues here.

My four month old was cocaine addicted at birth, but I haven't heard any concern about his teeth coming in wrong. He has started drooling more and chewing on everything so we were told to look out for some teeth. It might depend on the drug, but it might be something to talk to a dentist or pediatrician about.

My daughters teeth are fine.

Not all children's teeth come in a set way. I know normally the front teeth come in first, but with my middle son he looked like he had fangs for about 6 months before his front teeth came in.
