...are NYS attorneys allowed to live outside of NYS if they practice only in NY??? Thank you.

It is my understanding that YES they can, which is why Adoption Lawyers are allowed to practice in so many areas.

Yes - there isn't a residency requirement for NY lawyers, they just have to pass the bar in NY.

well, the only reference i have is a friend of a friend who has residences in ny and ct.

Yes.
You practice where you are admitted to the bar and you can be admitted in more than one state. No residency requirement.
