I was a risk free adoption. I spent my first 2 yrs of life in a very kind and loving Foster home I have been told. My adoptive parents and Foster parents where quite close when they whree finally able to bring me home. I actually have a couple of pictures of me laughing at the woman who raised me my first 2 yrs. I look so happy. I have 8 cousins who where adopted straight out of foster care, Im not sure who was Risk free or not but 3 of the 8 are looking to adopting their children from the Foster Care system and give those children a chance just like they had.
Im sorry to say I cant give you info but I hope this might help you realize it can be done and be prepared for the good, the bad and the ugly" sorry for the movie pun" that goes with it. |

5 of my siblings were adopted from foster care. There is a lot to know before getting into such a life changing situation. There are children who are up for adoption who are in foster care, some of them are "risk free" which means their biological parents rights were terminated and they are ready immediately to be adopted and other "at risk" adoptions which mean the child is still up for adoption but the biological parents rights haven't been terminated yet. The "at risk adoptions" can be very draining and emotional but can still turn out successful Make sure you do your research before taking this step to take a child into your home forever. |

Yes, our family did it, but if you are just looking to adopt I would stay away from foster care, because a lot of times they just try to use you and fool you into thinking you will get to adopt the child someday.
Check AdoptUsKids.org for a listing of kids waiting to be adopted, and get a home study done by a local company in your area. It will cost you a good 1000-2000 dollars though.
It will be too stressful to do foster kids if you plan on getting one to adopt. What could happen is you will have to deal with the birth parents constantly and allowing them frequent visits etc. Then they may either decide you aren't the right home for the child, or a relative will end up getting them because of legal relationship. Emotional attachment developed with a child and you will constantly worry that they can be taken away. It isn't worth doing foster care unless you plan on just being a foster parent for kids short term. If your dream is to adopt, stick with adoption only. |
