Please note that I'm looking for a hispanic baby boy preferably, but I'm open to other ethnicities as well as girls. I wanted the child to feel at home in my family, and since my girls are hispanic I think that would be best. I'm not trying to sound selfish or anything, but I really don't want a child with a disability because I teach Special Education and although I love my students, it is a challenge and I don't think I could really handle teaching them all day and then taking care of a disabled child at home as well. Has anyone had any experiences they can share with me?

This may not be a lot of help, but currently my husband's father and his stepmom are doing foster care. They have taken in a 20 month old girl, and two 12-year-old boys. They did not choose the genders, ethnicities, or ages of their kids, as far as I know. But I know that you could specify certain qualifications as far as what you prefer. I think they just left their specifications very broad. So far, their situation is just foster care, but with 2 of the kids, if the other possible guardians fall through on their hearings then the kids will stay there as permanent foster kids. I don't think it's the same as adoption, but am not sure what the difference would be and what would be necessary for them to do to adopt them.
Anyways, as far as just the foster care portion of the childcare, I believe they just attended a series of classes (6 weeks long, maybe?) and then started receiving kids that fit their details. And it depended on the situation of the kids they received as to whether they are going to become permanent or not... |

there are lots of foster children out there that do not have disabilities. They are all considered special needs children as most all have suffered some sort of mental ot physical abuse or neglect or just the trama of being taken from parents (good or bad) and placed with strangers. It is hard to actually adopt a baby in foster care as it takes 15 months before a child is eligible to be adopted as the state has to give the bio parents that long to try to get them back by correcting the issues that led them to foster care. Unless the parents willingly and voluntarily terminate their parental rights. |
