They will probably not come forward. They would be very old now, and they were so certain of their right-ness back then that I have a hard time thinking that they might see the error of their ways now.
Secondly, there is the liability factor. There is no statute of limitations for fraud. The agencies are aware that there are things in the records that will show them to be complicit and that is one reason that they are struggling to insure that those records remain sealed. It is also a reason that they are so insistent on getting the requirement added to open records things that if a woman denies contact that she be required to provide medical information on herself and her entire family, with no limits back. That requirement transfers the onus of liability from the agency to the mother. Agencies are being sued for "Wrongful Adoptions" by AP's and losing because the didn't disclose some critical medical fact. Now the aps are finding out, and suing. There was a case some time ago in Chicago, I believe, where they sued and won because the agency had failed to disclose a history of mental illness, and the son was bipolar. In his 30's he had to listen to the "parents" who raised him sue the agency saying that if they had known, they wouldn't have adopted a damaged infant. He committed suicide, I believe.
The agencies and social workers don't give a rat's *** about whether or not mothers or adoptees have their records. They just don't want to be sued. |

IDK!!

Before we ever considered adoption, we read a blog of a woman who was leaving an adoption agency because of the unethical practices.
She gave tips about how to check out an agency without them knowing it, like calling as an expecting mother and requesting information to see if their info is the same as when you called as an PAP.
If I knew I would be adopting I probably would have bookmarked it. |

I haven't seen any memoirs by nurses, but social work publications confirm the attitude of that era:
From Social Work and Social Problems (1964), published by the National Association of Social Workers:
". . . babies born out of wedlock [are] no longer considered a social problem . . . white, physically healthy babies are considered by many to be a social boon . . .
" Because there are many more married couples wanting to adopt newborn white babies than there are babies, it may almost be said that they, rather than out of wedlock babies, are a social problem. (Sometimes social workers in adoption agencies have facetiously suggested setting up social provisions for more 'baby breeding.')"
Hmm, sounds like the maternity homes were the perfect place for baby breeding and satisying the demands of infertile couples.

I don't see why they would. Between the hate mail and the legal liability, I don't think anyone would be willing to take that risk. |

It would be nice if they did. The least they could do is validate the mother's claims as to what they went through. Unfortunately, I find it very doubtful that they will. |
