Have you adopted a young child or baby publicly through the CAS?

I have heard that it is close to impossible to get placed with a 'healthy' newborn when dealing with the Children's Aide Society. But what does that mean, that it is more likely to get placed with a baby if he or she has special needs? Or are they both not very likely?
I'm looking into adopting a child with mild special needs. I'm just curious if being placed with an infant with special needs is also few and far between? Thanks so much... I'm in Canada if that matters..

Hello,
I adopted a sibling group from Ottawa CAS. My daughter and son came to us at ages 18 months and 3 years old.
There are babies in care. Some go straight from the hospital and into care as soon as they are born (those born with addictive substances in their bodies). Here is the deal with the babies in foster care: The first job of CAS is to keep families together, so a baby's mother is given the chance to meet the criteria to get her child back. Often these babies are in care for a full year before mom either gets them back or the courts decide that the baby should be Crown Ward No Access. At this point the baby is a year or more old and has been in the care of the same foster family for the duration of her life so far. The foster family is usually given the first option of adopting the baby. Many do. The only infant adoptions I have heard of at Ottawa CAS were done by the child's original foster parents. Here in Ontario, the kids that have the most need are boys ages 3 to 8. Apparently there is a plethora of little boys waiting for permanent placement. |

I don't know about Canada, but I adopted a sibling group through foster care. When they were placed with us, the youngest was practically right out of NICU (she had been there for 6 weeks). The thing is, we didn't ask for a baby. We asked to help kids with special needs and big sibling groups and we HAPPENED to get a baby. Sometimes, you have to let go of the chances of it happening and just let things...happen. |

Well, I don't know who you are talking too but I can assure you that is not the case.
My wife and I started the adoption process in Sept 07 and we were approved in mid Feb 08. Thats 5.5 months from start to finish. Three hours, yes, hours, after we were notified we were approved we were asked to take in a 4 day old. We actually had to pick her up from the hospital and bring her home. We are in a foster to adopt program and we had the adoption finalized by the time she was 5 months old.
She is now almost 9 months old. Completely happy, completely healthy and completely ours. I know our situation may be unique and as the commercials say, individual results may very, but that is what happened to us. It was a CAS adoption, in Canada.
Keep in mind there are typically many more children with special needs in the CAS system but you have full control over what you are able and willing to accept into your family. The workers work with you to create a match that will be suitable to both you and your family AND the child in need of adoption.
Call them, ask for some info and make your mind up from there if it's right for you or not. Contact me via my profile if you have any questions. |

I Love A Child With Autism!!!

It is usually easier when you are willing to adopt a child with special needs. Good for you for being willing to do so, I can tell you from first hand experience that it is the most rewarding experience you can ever imagine. Anyway, as you can tell by at least one other answer here, many are out to only acquire a perfect little healthy baby. |

I was looking on that website (CAS) and i really wanted to adopt a child from their. I wanted a healthy newborn also! But sometimes they place people with kids with special needs. But it may be a possibility that you can get a healthy newborn because my friend just got a newborn from CAS named Ayllison. |
