My best friend was abused in foster care. If your friends cannot accept a child exactly as they are, even if they're violent and angry, they should not be foster parents. Kids in foster care need acceptance above all else.

We have a 3 year old foster daughter. She acts like a three year old. SHe has tantrums one minute and gives hugs and kisses the next. SHe wants to follow the rules but tests them every chance she gets. Typical 3 year old. :)

edit- The oldest child we have fostered was 6. I am only 27 so it seemed odd to foster teenagers.

My family has been doing foster care for about 4 years now.
About a year and a half ago an 11 year old girl came to live with us. She was only meant to be staying with us for a week or 2. She is now living with us on a long term basis and wants to be adopted by my Mum.
It is an extremely rewarding job. Hope this helps :)

We fostered a sibling group that had already been split up - so they didn't know each other. Then we live in an area with very little in the "mental health resources" dept. The kids had been abused and neglected and so they abused - each other, the pets, the neighbor kids. Because they were neglected, they learned to steal (it was the only way they could get food in their original home).

Yes, these kids desperately need love and safety. But they also need extremely competent mental health services. They've been abused and they've lost everything they've ever known - including their parents. They can be incredibly destructive to a home, a marriage, and a family. Foster parents aren't seen as the hero by the kids. To these kids, foster parents are the bad guys until proven otherwise.

Potential foster parents need to know that it isn't all sunshine and roses. They need to be prepared and they need to have a really good child therapist (preferably one who works with foster kids) ready-to-go.

Yes, i have had a very bad experience. She wasn't actually a foster child, but thats what we claimed her as. I have 2 adopted children and their older sister wanted to come live with us. So we didn't adopt her she just lived here. She would not listen to our rules. She took everything for granted and totally disrespected us. It tore our whole family apart and we finally had to send her back to her biological mother, but her mother wasn't able to have her so she went into foster care. It was the worst year and a half of my life and i would NEVER do it again! I would maybe take children in that are 6 or younger! Thats just my opinion!
