Housing and fostering question? UK answers needed.?

Hey. I would like to become a foster carer in England (I live in the South) but the one thing in my way at the moment is my housing situation. I currently live at home with my mother and brother and sister and am not in a financial position to rent privately or buy my own house or flat. I work from home and would be able to do this from another property. I don't want to foster a child for the money (I was actually shocked when I looked into it and realised the level of payments), I want to be able to care for a child who needs love. That might sound trite, but I mean it. Basically, my question is whether anyone knows if I could approach my local authority and ask to be put on the housing list for a council property that was 2-bedrooms in order to be able to take care of a foster child, when I currently only would require a 1-bedroom place? I mean, of course I can ask, but what would their reaction be? I am currently recieving information from social services etc about training to be a foster carer but need to know where I would stand with regards to housing. If anyone has any experience in this or knows anything that might be able to help me with fostering, it would be much appreciated. As I am in the UK, I only need advice that would be relevant to the system here, but anyone elsewhere, any extra fostering advice would be welcome. Thank you all in advance :).
Additional Details
Please no one try to tell me I am doing this to claim benefits. I earn enough from home working to pay rent and support myself. And after a moron implied I was doing it for the money from social services, I am not, I do not need to foster for the money, and I do not want to sit on my behind all day getting money for having a child in my house. My area has a shortage of foster carers and I really would like to do something for a child who needs good care and a loving environment.

Call up the foster care system and ask. You should be able to get the numbers from the phone directory.
America also has private foster care companies in addition to the government run ones. Private facilities have different requirements than the government has. It's worth calling around.

They'll send you info, including the requirements.

Don't listen to the people here. I have never heard more hatefilled, bitter people.

Good luck

Um...I really don't think you are ready to care for a foster child if you haven't even started running a household of your own yet. I think you need to start by living on your own, whether that's council, affordable or private.

They will not consider you unless you can afford to own or rent a two-bed property and already live their. You could help kids in care another way. Look into volunteering opportunities with disadvantaged kids in your area.

It does not seem like you are ready to care for a child. You can't afford housing? How do you think you are going to care for a child.............

.....oh, let me guess......"The money from the care of the kid?"......which you claim you don't need.
