I was really would like to adopt a little boy or girl in a wheelchair or who has a physical disability. how would I do this?? Where??

Your local child protective services or Dept. of Human Services (who ever handles foster care in your area), will have several children available who really need assistance. With that help, there'll be financial aid to help the child you take in. They'll give you training on many things, and there are several requirements, which seem really high, such as criminal checks, TB tests, copies of your home and car insurance. They'll do a home study to ask a lot of questions to make sure that you're prepared to take on a lifelong committment. The process is about 4-6 months. And, it's free, except for a few fees, such as the TB test, and your own doctor's physical. Good luck |

Contact your local CPS/DSS office. You will need to complete background info and a homestudy. It is free or nearly free to adopt through foster care. You will get a packet during your training session that will allow you to choose what you think, as a parent, you can and cannot handle. If you believe you can care for a child with disabilities, then you simply check that box. |

You would most likely have to go through DSS or an adoption agency that specializes in special needs children.
Do you have experience in working with people with disabilities? I hope you do, or have educated yourself on the demands that you will be facing. This will be much harder work for you and will change your life drastically. I hope you have a good support system, because the challenges of parenting a disabled child can be overwhelming to a person who has not previous experience.
This can be disastrous if you don't know what you are getting into.
For you, and for the child. Make sure you EDUCATE yourself and get a sound SUPPORT system in place, because it won't be a stroll along the posie path.
The rewards will be worth it, but the road to get there will be challenging. |
