How can I find my birth mother?
|
I was born October 5th, 1983 at the Salvation Army Booth Memorial Hospital in Chicago Illinois. I know the attending physician's first name was Violeta. I have been told (but I'm not sure if it's true) that my birth mother was 16 years old at the time. I do know that she named me Amber. My name has since been changed, and maybe hers has too. I've wanted to find her my entire life. I'm registered on numerous websites. So far I haven't heard a thing, but I think about this every day. I know it isn't smart to put personal information up on the internet... but I can't stop myself because now I'm 25 years old and all this time I've been needing to see her. Maybe she doesn't want to meet me, maybe the best I'll ever get is a photograph... but please, god, somebody help me get that far. I don't have any money to pay anyone. I've run out of the limited resources I've had. Even if I never get to meet her, I need to at least know if I look like her. That's all I'm asking. I can't stop crying. Can anyone out there help me? Leave your email address if you think you may be able to. Please. This isn't just a question, it's a plea.

In addition to registering with the ISRR, I found the below information I had saved re. getting Booth records. Why don't you contact them and confirm this is still the case. The least they would be able to do is put a Waiver of Confidentiality from you in your file. Also, ask if your mother has filed a Waiver with them or made contact looking for you. Often these places won't tell you unless you point blank ask...
I am a first mother who stayed at the Booth Home in Pittsburgh - I was able to get my records from them a few years ago and they were really helpful. The person in the regional office I contacted said that just because state's records were sealed, there's were not and they want to help whenever they can.
Good luck.
Add'l info...you do NOT need a lawyer. In fact it's better if you don't have one because people will help you more if they don't think they have to make decisions that set a legal precedence. Don't waste your money or listen to people who don't understand the unique world of adoption search.
(There were Booth Memorial Hospitals in most major U.S. cities and they were
run by the Salvation Army. The hospitals are closed now (maybe) and the
records have been warehoused at the Salvation Army Facility in Des Plaines
Illinois. This is their number (847) 294-2900.
You have to send a letter from a doctor (saying records are needed for
medical purposes) and a check for $25.00. You have to give them your name, your
birthmom's name, your date of birth and the city in which you were born. |

I found this info on Illinois Adoption Laws on this website:
http://laws.adoption.com/statutes/illinois-laws.html
While the laws in Illinois prevent you from getting personal information about your birth parents, it looks like they have a way to contact the birth parents through a confidential intermediary. Then they can tell you if your birth parents would agree to be contacted. They probably don't even know you are looking for them. I've included the info on this service below. You can read more from this site on the link at the top of this response. Good luck.
Using a confidential intermediary:
Adopted adults 18 or older and adoptive parents of an adoptee younger than 18 may use the confidential intermediary service.

First, register with the International Soundex Reunion Registry at www.isrr.net. The ISRR is the largest, free mutual consent registry in the world, and considered the best. ISRR is international and well-known to searchers on and off the Web. If your information (birth date, birthplace, name, year of adoption, and yes, your father’s SSN) matches that from another entry, someone will notify you. Please note that this is a passive registry, meaning that no one will use your information to actively search for another person. Instead if your father happens to have registered there, your information will be given to him, and vice versa. More information is on this page: www.reunite.com/adoption-records/first-s...
Another place to register is with one of the Adoption Reunion Registries. There are different types of registries – offline registries, country-specific registries, state-specific registries, registries for specific groups (twins, Native Americans, etc.), and registries for adoptions through specific agencies. Some registries charge fees to participate. |
