My friend and her husband are going to be adopting a baby, I never realized how expensive it is!!! They are struggling with covering the adoption cost (fees, travel, ect). She is an amazing woman & will make a wonderful mother. She has overcome so much in her life & always wanted to be a mother, and it makes me sick to see someone who would be an amazing mom trying so hard, when all I hear on the news is mothers who abuse, neglect and even murder their children. I unfortunately can not be of much financial help, but I want to, any ideas how to raise the money? Additional Details OMG do not get me started on state adoption its so sad, long very sad story short-
She & her husband fostered hoping to adopt for 10 months, she had contact w the mom and had visits with her often. (she was a trashy druggy scumbag) Well the state gave the mom custody back because she completed rehab ect. My friend stayed close babysat all the time gave her money ect. the mom relapsed on drugs would show up at my friends house at all hrs of the night stung out, drunk, high, asking for her to watch the baby. Of course she did, but also contacted dss, the state did nothing. My friend found a rehab for her and offered to watch the baby ect. When she got out things seemed good, but then my friend hadent seen or heard from them in a month so she stopped by their home. No one answered but the door was unlocked so she went in, it was trashed, and no one was home, but my friend found the baby in his crib passed away. He died of shaken baby syndrome, it was horrible.

Like I'm sure some people know, just getting a part time job to cover an adoption is not nearly enough (especially if you already have a full time job and it's not cutting it). A family I know made a recipe book and sold it to take care of costs. They sold it on line as well as at church, in front of stores, etc. They did this as well as garage sells, rocking chair- athons (similar to running marathons, except the person pledged to a certain amount of money per hour for however long the aParents rocked in a rocking chair),asked the church to give them 5 minutes in all the services to let them explain why they wanted to adopt, hosting a Blog dedicated to raising money for the adoption.
They had to do a lot of fund raising b/c they were adopting three siblings from Ethiopia, and all these things worked.
Hope some of these ideas helped,

We were foster parents and also had bad experiences but that didn't stop us from adopting children in waiting. I never agreed with "foster to adopt" I think you either foster or adopt...if fostering leads to adoption so be it, but fostering is about trying to keep children safe while parents work out their issues. Adoption is a last resort.
There are still many children waiting to be adopt.
As for your actual question, bank loans, and if you can't afford a bank loan, then adopt a waiting child. We don't throw fundraisers for birth mothers who "can't" afford to raise their children so I don't believe in fundraisers for us adoptive mothers. I think everyone can scale back on things and materials goods if they really need the money. |

Not all adoption cost money....and wonderful mothers are very much needed for the 120,000 children waiting in foster care for wonderful parents.... Foster Care adoptions are free or nearly free. |

Take a loan out at a bank & make monthly payments...like everyone has to do for everything these days, good luck!!! |

There are grants and other assistance programs that she could apply for. She can talk to her adoption agency about eligibility.
She can also look into other forms of adoption. She can cut her travel expenses considerably if she adopts locally rather than in Korea for example.
You and all of your friends could have a garage sale. Give all the proceeds to her.
If she is an active member of a church, you could request a special offering be taken.
Anyone who's willing to help could start taking all kinds of odd jobs. Mow someone's lawn for $10. Wash some cars for $10 each. All kinds of little things like that will add up. I know it seems silly, but doesn't every little bit help?
That's a few ideas just off the top of my head. |

Can't help you with raising the money, but the US Govt gives a tax rebate on adoptions, I think it's like 10,000 |

Have a yard sale.
Sell anything you don't really need on eBay.
Have a fundraiser - sell those rubber bracelets, candy bars, or anything else people will buy.
Have a basket raffle - get people to donate nice items, then raffle them off.
Have a church supper. |

I am not trying to be cruel. However, the question needs to be asked. How will your friend support the child if she can't get the money to adopt? It sounds like she will be using everything she has, and borrowing some, just to adopt.
Keep that in mind. |

Refinance your house
Use your tax refunds
Borrow from family or friends
Take out a personal loan
Cash in stocks, bonds, retirement savings
Do fundraisers, make & sell crafts
Have charity yardsale (ask friends and family for donations)
Buy a lottery ticket
Use credit cards |

I think you should organize a fundraiser. Contact a local park with a trail to host the event. Have people sign up to walk a certain amount - say 2 miles or 5 miles. They can get donations from friends and family for every mile they walk. Have them ask their employers for matching donations. Also solicit local businesses such as childrens' clothing stores for donations. Offer them free ad space at the event. |
